Hmm, the N79 isn't listed as having free navigation but maybe it's worth downloading the version for the N86 8MP (since it runs the same version of S60).

The $15 is the annual license fee for the voice-guided navigation feature. On newer phones, such as my X6, this is provided for free, but for older models, including the N79 and my N82, Nokia charges this fee. I think it is a pretty good deal given all the features, especially the offline capabilities.
Without paying the fee, you can still use Nokia Maps to see your current location, view any maps you've downloaded, and get directions between locations, just not the voice guided feature.

That was a while ago with the old maps version.
You have to upload maps through Ovi suite with the latest maps releases. No other way - that's what it says on betalabs.
Just an advertisement to lighten up the mood: I want to get this turn by turn feature... but first, I need to buy my own car![]()
That I've done. I have downloaded my current state - West Virginia - through Ovi suite, and it automatically puts it on the memory card.
When I search for directions from my current position to the capital, it says "Searching offline" but still finds the destination;
gives ETA, distance, an initial voice direction:
Then in a minute or less this message pops up:
And when I choose No, it goes back to my current location with no trace of directions or anything:
What gives?!?!?![]()
hmmm i wonder what license it is asking for
Says "North America navigation license"... ??
I don't have my Nokia phone(s) with me, but I think there are two ways to get directions - one says something like "Drive to" and the other something like "Show route" or "Show directions". If you try to do it using the "Drive to" command, then it thinks you want voice-guided navigation, and therefore it checks for the license. The "Show route" command will list out the turn-by-turn directions, and show it on the map I think, but shouldn't require a license.
I'll check on my N82 or X6 when I get back home this evening.
All I got is:
Show on map
Explore
Walk to
Drive to
Show details
Save
Add to route
Send
Well my theory was that if you installed the "free" version for the N86 over the top of what you currently have installed on your N79, then it wouldn't bother checking for a licence.
My basis for this theory is the N85. I had an N85 that used to ask for a licence (it is not supported for free navigation), and installed the N86 version over the top of it. I then got the free voice navigation.
Using my X6 (Ovi Maps v3.04), I select "Add to route". On the next screen, I then have the option to either "Add new route point" or, using the left soft key, to "Show route". If I select "Show route", then it shows the route on the map and I can select arrows to walk through each step of the route.
The N79 may be a bit different and you may have to use the center button to bring up some of these options. The newer Ovi Maps is better, but the older versions of Nokia/Ovi Maps are not particularly intuitive. I'll try to look at my N82 later and see what the process is on that device running Ovi Maps 3.01.
He is referring to the version of Ovi Maps that gives you free voice-guided navigation; I think it is v3.04 but I'm not certain of that. When Nokia first released this version, some of their more recent phones were able to install it, while others, like the N82, N95, N79, and N85, could not, at least officially. If the N79 is using the same build of S60 as the N85 and the N86, then you may be able to install the version of Ovi Maps for the N86 and get the free navi license.I see your logic... But what precisely do you mean by "the "free" version for the N86"?
Free maps, free what? I am not sure...
