Turn the phone off, take out the battery/SIM/SD card, and hold R as you put the battery in. Hold R as it power cycles 3-4 times, then let go.

This is a master reset and you will not lose anything, however it will reset your phone's settings. I had this problem and now the phone reads the battery properly.

I tried this and when mine comes back up (I'm still holding down the R) and the pop up message comes up "back cover removed - yada yada yada".

I tried holding down the R button a little longer and nothing happened. When I let go and got past the "back cover removed" message it just brings me to the unlock code like a normal reboot.
