I think the i760 has it best. It is a rediculously quiet 3 beeps (be within a foot or two to hear it), easily blockable just cover the top speaker by the led. Also, after an emergency call it allows you to leave emergency mode and go back to normal without a soft or hard reset (think this applies to all WM phones, but I may be wrong).
Does anyone know if the LG Env2 has this dangerous "feature".
I currently have the LG 8100 and did the Tools, system, ER numbers route and removed 911 from the list of emergency numbers then dialed 911 (no Send though), the phone went into ER mode even though the number had been erased from the ER numbers list. I added my own phone number to that list, dialed, even pressed send, no ER mode, no tone, only VM. I tried 611 and *611, both number which were also pre-programed into the ER numbers and neither of them made a tone or put the phone into ER mode.
Conclusion, on the LG8100 you can delete the 911 number, but the phone still recognizes it as an ER# and will act like it is programed to.
I like many other others think the tone should be an option and could be very dangerous in the wrong situation.

I believe that list is really for numbers that will work when the phone is locked or something like that--not really for something like the emergency tone, which would only apply to the 911 number exclusively and basically by default.

I just found this actually. Go to Settings & Tools / Sound Settings / Alert Sounds / Emergency Tone. You can set Tone, Vibrate, or Off. Just tested it with Vibrate and Off and it does disable 911 notification when Off.

You actually called 911? Most people don't actually try that like that.
It is NOT pointless to have the ICE.
As a retired Paramedic, I can tell you that it became the normal thing when with an unconcious patient for the police or EMT/Paramedics to look for the ICE contacts on the victim's cell phone so that the an ID could be made as well as have a person meet the patient at the hospital who could make some decisions that an unconcious person would not be able to do.
In most cases, I personally would not want the alarm going off on the phone that called 911, bringing unwarranted attention to the caller. However, the times it would be good though would be if someone passed out while calling 911, so that the alarm would assist the rescuers to find the person (or even keep the responders from leaving the scene when they could not find a victim).
There is no way to know a head of time which is the way you will need it during an emergency, and the average person would have shaking fingers and slow decision making capabilities to turn the feature on/off during a stressful situation. All in all, the 911 alarm sound is a Catch-22 feature if I ever saw one.
I noticed someone called 911 to test, and was getting callbacks. In many call centers that is the SOP in case the victim cannot speak or had the phone taken from them by a criminal... you are lucky a cop was not dispatched to check up on you!
I have a brand new G'zone type-s (red and silver) and i added our local weather line to the emergency list just to check this out. i typed the number in, and EMERGENCY came on the screen. i pressed send and it made a 2.5 second long "siren" sound. it was very quiet, much quieter than speakerphone, and only lasted about 2 seconds. it was nowhere near as loud as a ringer on the phone either. it was the same volume no matter what the phone ringer was set on, though. but hiding in a closet in my house, im sure nobody could hear it.
Just wanted to make a quick update and point out that some phones, like at least the Chocolate 2, got some updated versions of their firmware and some of those included a new option to change or completely disable this emergency tone alert setting.
On one of my last LG VX8350's I could turn this feature off (after I got a different phone with a newer firmware on it) and my VX8800 version4 (The Venus) also has the ability to turn off the Emergency tone!! I suspect all new phones / newer phone firmware will likely have the ability to turn this feature off now.
