I'm considering filing a formal complaint to verizon and the FCC about this, it really bothers me. I hope to god I am never in a situation where I *need* to covertly dial 911 but if I am I do not want some idiotic feature blowing up my spot...

I have a treo, have not used it when in "silent" mode but wonder if that would truly be silent.....

In nyc/jersey I witness car accidents probably once or twice a month and I always call it in... every second helps if someone is critically injured (I even stop if its not too dangerous).. so I will get to test it at some point I'm sure..

But like the other have said, make it an OPTION in the "security" menu dont force it onto us...

Yes this should work on all/most of Verizon's phones I have not tested other models however when I removed *611 and 611 from the list of Emergency #'s I NO longer hear that siren when dialing them, I would say it is safe to assume that would be true for removing 911 as well. In theory you could put any # in there and it should alarm for that. In fact I put in 800-922-0204 and it alarms on it if i want it to.

Also if you dial the number WITHOUT hitting send Emergency should be displayed on the screen if the siren would go off after hitting send, so easy test without actually calling 911. So long as your finger doesnt slip LOL.

On my wife's LG 8550 (new chocolate), if you dial 911 (without sending), I do see the 'Emergency' banner on the top. Would that indicate the alarm will go off? However I can't find a way to test it with other numbers. I added my contact to the ICE list, and get no banner and no alarm when dialing it. Also, there are no emergency number settings in the phone settings -> security settings. Can anyone confirm/deny this 'feature' on this phone?

    Thanks,
    John

i have a cingular phone and i've had to dial 911 more then once, every time with that wonderful alarm, and i've had this phone for over 2 years now, so it seems it might just be a "feature" of most phones that are out there now.
Yeah like he said it is even on most GSM LGs and Samsungs, Motorola is putting that feature in some of their newer phones, Nokia hasnt ever had that because Nokia is smart, thats why they're the #1 manufacturer when it comes to mobile phones....just too bad they dont make CDMA anymore...

Ive experienced this feature several years ago, and if or the record if you guys are making a list the Motorola RAZR V3m w\ VZW firmware doesn't have the alarm. BTW making an Emergency Call makes your phone stuck in Emergency Mode w\ 1x only even if you're in EVDO coverage and cant get out of it unless you power cycle the phone, probably for location info\other various purposes

So I guess this means that the carrier really doesn't have anything to do with it, it is the manufacturer of the phone that creates the firmware.

FWIW, I think it is funny how everyone automatically assumes that the carrier is behind everything......and Verizon has become the Microsoft of the wireless world....the 800 pound gorilla that everyone loves to hate.

They complain that Verizon cripples their phones so you have to buy ringtones through GIN, and yet Apple crippled the iPhone so you have to pay them for a ringtone, even if you've already paid for the song....and yet everyone says how great the Jesus phone is.

I have the new v9m from us cellular. Just tested this out by going into the programming menu, deleted 911 and *911, and put 611 in its place.

Exited the menu, then dialed 611 (including hitting send). The top of the phone said emergency, the call went through, and NO alarms went off. Sounds like this is provider specific.... (or part of vzw's UI).

I just tested dialing 911 on my Sprint Motorola Q. It made three short beeps before placing the call. It wasn't super loud. I might have been able to muffle the sound by covering the phone up with a pillow or something. Still... that's really dangerous.

The E815 does that three beep thing. Personally, that doesn't bother me one bit.
If an Amp'd Hollywood is left in the forest... and no carrier is around to push a bogus PRL, is it still something more than a brick?

I guess a deft/dumb person can dial 911, and since they themselves are silent, the phone will scream for them. That fits right into the kind of very warped logic the government (FCC) would use, to appease the handicapped.

A similar reasoning that gives us drive-up ATM's in braille.

I guess a blind person could lean out of the driver-side backseat window and perform the transaction.

But that still doesn't explain how a loud noise from your phone makes calling 911 any easier or better.

In my city, the police want people to call 9-1-1 if there are criminals on their property, even if the criminals are just trespassers or vandals.

3-1-1 is for information and business. It takes too long for the call to get to dispatch. So they specifically say to call 9-1-1 for vandals or trespassers. I was told this by both the 3-1-1 and the 9-1-1 dispatcher last week when I called 3-1-1 to report trespassers on my property.

Your fix didn't work. I followed your instructions and removed 911 from my list of emergency numbers. Then I dialed 911. When I hit send, the alarm still went off.

Thanks for the suggestion. But it doesn't disable the 9-1-1 alarm on the gZone type S.
