FYI, I've had to call 911 on my V3M, and my U740. Neither one emits any
tone, just goes into emergency mode to turn on the GPS. Afterwards it was
easy enough to clear and all was well. I wonder if there is a list anywhere of
the phones with the audible alarms?

    Angry Armed and dangerous

Consult your local laws as it concerns self-defense. Usually you cannot defend other peoples' (or your own) property. Physical harm is the only justification for self defense, especially lethal force. Even then, distance is imperative. Long story short, if you are armed, stay inside, and forget about your neighbors' property. Forget about your phone, the police in an armed conflict are only for re-enforcement purposes. If someone has a gun to your head, the police are only going to get there and ask "I wonder who shot this guy?" Get a defendable position, a CHL, and a .357 mag and call for the possee. The tone is irrelevant is you are in such a defendable position, and if you are not, the police will not be able to get there in time anyway and you should move to Canada. Thank you so much for your time and I would like to give a special thank you to my two best friends: Smith, and Wesson.

I'd only dial 911 to report an accident happen in front of me and the people need emergency attention. Or medical emergency someone had a heart attack. And finally I'd call 911 if I see FIRE in the house or neighbor's house.
Would you rather wait for something to happen or be pro-active? There is no reset in life and I could not live with myself if my wife or my kids were harmed because I waited for them to be threatened.

Verizon has better service almost everywhere. AT&T has better service in my house and I get the iPhone. Sorry Verizon, should have fixed the service in my area! Because "marginal" is good enough for you, I'm out! Peace!

I don't' have to sell it so why the hell would I use it? Duh.

Well, first thing I would do is gather my family to a safest room and call the police. With the police on the line, I would tell the perp or perps I am armed so if they still want to break down the door for whatever reason, then I'd have no choice but to use the deadly force instead of waiting for the police to arrive after them. I am not saying the phone alarm is a good idea. I think it's a bad idea for most people who's hiding in a quiet place. But in my case, it wouldn't make a different. Oh, I also have two very protective dogs in the house too. They'd make a lot of noise when someone trying to get entry without me or my family opening the door.

Until you've been in a position where you have had to call the police where any outside noise can give you away, you don't fully understand how such a thing can adversely affect you.

Kinda like Pro Choice or Pro Life hu? lol
I would pull a Joe Horn on them

Don't say anything to an intruder, especially that you are armed (assuming that you are). Doing so gives away your position, leads the intruder right to you, and takes away the element of surprise. A retired LEO once told me, if someone breaks into your house in the cover of night, it is a good chance that they have a "plan" for you, or they are too crazy to care either way. After you have already called the police and it is confirmed that they are on the way then consider telling the intruder that the police have been called. I suppose it would not hurt to tell an intruder that you are armed if you are actually not, as it may scare them away. Long story short, if you are armed, you already made the choice to kill someone (guns are made for shooting bullets only, and bullets are made to kill, not just make someone uncomfortable). In the cover of night in your own home you have every right to shoot that intruder dead, and you should (if you have the gun). If this is not how you feel, you probably should not have a gun.

ANYWAYS....... anyone know how to get rid of the stupid tone with the Verizon UI yet? Because as of now, I am my own personal police force [clutches beretta].

You should be able to assign a non-emergency number like 611 has an actual emergency one using the NAM extended programming. Many people don't know how to get into the programming menu of their phones so this won't work for everyone.

BTW, on my Motorola V9m (Verizon UI), dialing an emergency number does not sound an audible alert.

    Non emergency 911 calls

Most police departments have trimmed their budgets by handling their calls via 911. After bothering our local department for a non emergency number I was given one. I called it and the 911 operator answered.

This loud beeping when dialing 911 is an awful "feature".

I agree completely this has to be the most incredible moronic things the phone companies have come up with. Why cant it just say thru a "ringtone", "you have called 911", and make it so you could turn it off. I am afraid to call 911 now, if i had to for the fear of attracting attention to myself. Which in most 911 situations is a bad thing. I had a phone do this to me a while back, and because i wasn't expecting it, i dropped that phone. So the genius who thought this up, didn't realize that it

    A. Might scare people using it.
B Create a more dangerous situation.
    C. Might prevent someone from calling 911. I can give 1000's of reasons, see the news at night.

    D. Not ergonomic if you in a tense situation, why do they think you need to hear a siren ? Maybe a comfort tone.

Verizon customer calls phone alarm 'dangerous'

06:36 PM CST on Friday, November 9, 2007

An Austin woman who dialed 911 recently discovered what she said could be a fatal flaw in some new cell phones.

“I think it’s a danger to everyone,” she says.

Carol, who asked that her last name not be used for fear of making herself or her land a target for vandals, called for help recently when she arrived at some vacant property she owns in east Austin and found her security chain gone.

She grabbed her new Casio G’zOne phone from Verizon Wireless, which to her horror made an audible alarm when she called 911.

Fearing vandals were still on the property, she hung up and hid, then put her hand over the earpiece and dialed again to muffle the sounds.

I was afraid the criminals were down the driveway and they would hear and they would know somebody was doing something and they would come out to stop me,” she said.

The alarm is not ear-splitting, but it is loud enough to be heard at least several yards away.

As pointed out earlier in the thread it's all due to an very vague FCC regulation. I think a big part of the issue here, also as pointed out earlier in the thread, is that FCC should really not be allowed to simply create vague regulations and should be required to work out all the details in the best possible way before making anything a regulation.

The referenced article has more information about it, but I doubt anyone really has anything more about it.
