The security is not the only difference between v2 and v1. The v2 and v3 cards have afaik much more space to store SMS and phonebook entries and stuff like that... Plus they are 3G capable. v1 cards only work on GSM and with GPRS, which is really bad if you wanna use the phone's 3G features...
Quick idea: Why not trying this with a Stealth SIM (aka Turbo SIM) which made the locked iPhone usable with any SIM. The method how it works is described on that page.
Concerning the iPhone, the Stealth/Turbo SIM has afair to be programmed to emulate AT&T's IMSI. In our case we would have reprogram it for DoCoMo. But I have no idea how difficult it is... Somebody knows more about that?
Yes, I think you are right. I just asked the StealthSIM Team if something like that would be possible. And here is their answer:
"FROM: Stealthsim.com
Yes, we can apply Stealthsim method to unlock other phone but it willrequire time and money consuming. Unless it's popular like iphone, we willnot take this chance for other cell-phone.
HAVE A GOOD DAY!"
So, how can we proof them now that it's worth the time and money?
I mean, seriously, they could make a lot of money if they get it to work with DoCoMo, Softbank and AU...
It's all in the SIM. That means that it doesn't matter if it's the iPhone or not, it will work. The notable exception is the 904SH and (presumably) all Softbank phones after it, which check the IMSI far more often than the iPhone does (the iPhone only checks at boot time, the 904SH checks every time the menu is entered, every time something is done, etc).
E-mail them with a link to DoCoMo's English product line-up page and tell them that if they are willing to do this, they could be have a monopoly on making those phones work outside Japan. Almost every DoCoMo phone tops the iPhone, which is made plainly obvious.
I will get this and see what can be done to it... I hope i will NOT destroy the sim or what ever is it in...
It has ATT's info inplanted and it uses your currect (the service you want to use it on) SIM on top... I think its only the part of changing the IMSI on the StealthSIM to the Docomo's IMSI... Or is there more to this then what I can see?
I think If I can get them to do it, how much will it cost me? Because if I have it done 1 time I can use any Docomo phone as long as its GSM compatible...
EDIT:
I have just sent them an Email also requesting this. I also asked if it can be done, How much will it cost...
Just interested. Lets see if they just tell me to get lost.
EDIT2:
The more people email them asking about this, may make them consider this.
I only hope that they may look at it as a way to make money, aswell as bieng the FIRST company that made it posible...
Even if they just consider this, it will be a good choice on there end.

Indeed the only difference between the iPhone and any DoCoMo phone is afaik the fact, that the Japanese phones will check the IMSI far more often.
Actually, to get the StealthSIM work with DoCoMo or Softbank or AU, we'd "only" have to
a) know under what circumstances our Japanese phone checks the IMSI
b) and then modify the program source code of the StealthSIM application to suit our phones needs.
While a) should be not too difficult to find out, the b) part shouldn't be too easy though. I have no idea how to do this actually... I tried to understand this hack concerning the iPhone, but without proper programming skills it may not be done. On the other hand, I'm quite sure there are lots of people out there who could do this. Maybe the people from hackint0sh could help? In case the StealthSIM company really can't be convinced... But anyway I'm gonna mail them again!
I seriously thought about opening a petition for that and sending a bunch of signatures to StealthSIM then.
Of course our Japanese phones are not as popular as the iPhone because nobody ever forced a hype like Apple did. So the community of Japanese-cellphone-lovers is not as famous as the iPhone lobby, but it's definitely true that the StealthSIM company could make a fortune by investing the time and money for this hack! People would pay A LOT of money if this hack would work properly!

A Chinese forum post answered (a) and (b) for Softbank- the IMSI is checked every time the menu is entered or exited, every time a Java application is launched, every time a new text message is sent, accessing pretty much every function will invoke the IMSI check. In the SuperSIM, this was worked around by having the card report China Mobile's IMSI to get a signal right after boot, making a call, then pulling out the battery to shut down the phone. As expected, this leaves a few "loose ends" which are exploited. The SuperSIM is then rewritten to report the Softbank IMSI all the time, and it will work from then on (probably a bug revealed by improperly shutting down the phone- maybe someone can offer a more technical explanation?).
As shown in the Sharp forum by someone that has the SIM-hacked 904SH, it can work.
On a tangent, I wish Sharp would get on board for T-Mobile's 3G launch. It would be lots more exciting than what they have planned for now.
I'm personally not against this StealthSIM way of doing it, but... The fact that you have to cut the original SIM card is a bit eww for me... (even if it's not the data part of it)
Although yes, it would make a lot of things easier, since you wouldn't have to make a new card for every card you might have in order to use it in a DoCoMo phone.
And should it be possible to get all the needed information from the DoCoMo USIM cards, which most probably are all v2 or v3, it would get really interesting... How many times do the DoCoMo phones check the IMSI, is it possible to overcome the checks? We live in interesting times...
Bunning those Japanese handsets in Europe from 2005.
I just got my stealthsim in and it worked perfect! I was a bit scared to slice the sim but it wasnt soo bad. Jail break and insert off you go 1.1.2 works!!!!!!!!!
ohh.. I got mine from www.stealthsim.ca fyi

Did you - by any chance - read this thread? Everybody knows it works with the iPhone. Plus, we really have no interest in the iPhone since the phones we are talking about here are WAY better!
