Can I use my iphone without the activation and edge data plan??
I want to buy the 8gb Iphone but I don't want to have to upgrade my plan. Can I still use the iphone and get rid of the data plan, or not ever add it on to begin with? For example, isn't there a method to bypass the activation so you can just use your cingular/at&t SIM and not have to mess around with your plan???

Yes there is, if you're on AT&T already, you just have to activate your sim.

Like MacGeek15 says there is a way to bypass iTunes activation (and forgo having to add the data plan). But by going this route, I strongly suggest either:
1) having a data plan if you intend to use Safari/Mail/etc beyond WiFi hotspots. OR
2) disabling EDGE/data access (either by using a tool like Services or asking AT&T CS to turn off data to your account).
This will keep from having exuberant charges on your bill when you use your phone.

you can activate the new sim, let AT&T add the $20 iphone data plan, then go to your account management online and remove the data plan. BUT, like others have said, be prepared to pay the "bend you over" pay per use data charges (currently $0.01 per KB I beleive - that's $10 per megabyte...) If you're willing to pay $400 for the phone why not pay the extra $20 a month for the unlimited edge data???????????

because edge is slow and soon enough they will have the 3g iphone version out.

How do I bypass the iTunes Activation?
Is there something called itoggle which can enable you to only use wi-fi and turn off edge data?????

The problem is this:
$39.99 for voice plan
$14.99 for 1500 txt and 5MB of Data (extra $5 get me unlim data but only 200txt)
I wouldn't mind paying an extra $5 and having edge data, however now I'm screwed out of 1300 txt messages (the plan only has 200). So basically if I need more txt messages I can add 1000 txt for $10 but I don't want to have to pay $70-75 for my cell phone every month. That's just getting ridiculous.
$50-60 is a reasonable amount to pay for a cell phone every month.

1) Consult the hacking subforum for stickies that explain this. It's usually done as part of the jailbreak process.
2) I like using iToggle, but iToggle has been known to have problems with disabling Edge on 1.1.2 firmware phones (BTW: AT&T stores might have pre-1.1.2 firmware phones, but don't count on it). I've heard fewer prblems with the Services application (that works the same way).
so i can buy an iphone, use the itunes activation bypass to fail the credit check,
get my iphone on a go-phone plan, and cancel the go phone plan within a month and place my normal att sim in the phone?

is that correct?
No, if you wanted to use it with your current SIM, your best option is to 'fake activate' it from the start.
iTunes activation links the inserted SIM to the phone, adding a specific lockdownd file (the file that contains the activation info) and adding appropriate plans (or creating accounts). Even if you did what you suggested, it would still be locked to the gophone SIM and wouldn't work with your current SIM.
You'd have to get a 'cracked' or 'generic' lockdownd file on the phone to get the your current AT&T SIM to work. This would involve a jailbreak tool.
I DESPERATELY want an iPhone, but absolutely do NOT need or want to pay for a data plan as I'm fine with waiting to use the internet until I'm in a wi-fi hotspot. I also don't want to deal with hacks, unlocking, jailbreaking, whatever you want to call it, as I want to be able to update the firmware whenever updates are available without having to worry about getting caught.
However, I've read conflicting reports on the options. Some say it is as simple as calling soon after activation, threatening to cancel the whole account unless the data plan is removed, but others say that if I open Safari outside of a wi-fi hotspot, say, perhaps, when I'm not 100% sure that I'm within range of a hotspot and it turns out that I'm out of range, that Safari will work and I'll get charged for data transfer.
Regarding the latter, isn't there some setting that I can change to prevent the phone from transferring data over EDGE?
I'll just bump this one more time. Thought there might be someone here who could help with this.
I've since found out through further investigation that my only choice might be to jailbreak it and use the Services app to disable EDGE.
Problem is, I get REALLY nervous, like so nervous that I end up chickening out, tinkering with firmware. It's one thing to overcome my nervousness once, but if I have to keep doing it everytime Apple releases an update to the firmware, then I'm setting myself up for regular doses of anxiety that I just don't want to deal with.
If you don't want to jailbreak, you can simply remove the data plan via AT&T OLAM and then call CS and request a data block on that line. This way you'll never get charged for data. Simple as that!
I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

XFF, I've read in several places online that the option to remove the data plan via AT&T OLAM (stands for Online Account Mgt.??) was removed because so many people discovered it.
Interestingly, I just got off the phone with AT&T and I'm VERY close to switching providers and ditching the iPhone dream altogether. I basically did everything I could, including threatening to take my business to another carrier, unless they offered me the option to get the iPhone without the data plan. I'm telling them that I'd buy the iPhone if they'd only do this one thing, and they wouldn't. (I wonder how Steve Jobs feels about that?)
Also of interest, I asked about the AT&T Tilt, and they said that: 1. If I wanted the phone without a data plan I would not be eligible for a rebate, which means paying $299 for the phone, which is not that big a deal considering I'm prepared to pay $399 for the iPhone; 2. BUT, if I don't buy a data plan, then I won't even be able to use the wi-fi! That is outrageous!!!
It's a lousy business model, making the data plan mandatory, limiting choices for the consumers who keep these big companies in business.

Actually, the Tilt is $399.99 with a 2-year contract before MIR.
