question about iphone unlock?

hello. i am interested in buying the iphone but i plan on using it under the tmobile network. If i go right now and buy it from the apple store...will i get the firmware 1.1.2 which cant be unlocked? How can i tell from looking at the box what the firmware of the phone is? and if i do purchase the phone with the 1.1.2 firmware, an i downgrade to 1.0.2 and than unlock it and than upgrade again? thx for the help.

I'm going to answer this in point form haha

-Most Apple stores carry week 45+ iPhones now with 1.1.2 OTB, you have a better chance IF you can get one from AT&T store
-check the serial no. for the 4th and 5th digit, which is the week, must be BELOW 45
-downgrading 1.1.2 OTB will NOT allow you to unlock because you still have the same BOOTLOADER.

So what excuse should I use if the guy brings out a box that has a serial number of more than 45????lol

I would just ask them straight up for a pre week 44 phone due to (make something up like screen issues). Worst they will say is they won't do it.

i went to the nearest at&t store in a mall and my former classmate was working there and i asked him to get me an iphone and i asked for like five different boxes until he finally caught on and i told him yea i wanted to unlock it and he said he didnt have any that were pre 1.1.2. crap!!! gotta wait for the unlock for it or buy it off ebay...which one?

on the auctions on ebay...they seem to say that "you will need a next sim." what is that? the sim that came with my tmobile mda, is that a next sim? thanks

Next Sim is sort of like TurboSim or StealthSim...bassically theres so many to catch up with. But what it does is use your sim card with a "circuit board" type simcard in the iphone together...it tricks the phone to thinking its on AT&T but its really T-Mobile. T-Mobile will show up on the screen. The ebay auctions saying that basically are selling you a 1.1.2 OTB phone which CANNOT be unlocked via software. If this is the route you want to go down... refrain from buying it on ebay because its priced more than the apple store (try to make profit off of oversees people). You in the USA, should buy it from apple and use one of the SIMs mentioned above.

Or buy a high priced 1.1.1 OTB iphone
