I was talking to a Rogers BlackBerry tech yesterday and he said that they were about 2 weeks from releasing wifi BlackBerry handhelds. ie 8820, 8320 and 8120 all to go with the UMA access they are releasing.
The option to "register" showed up on my account today, so I went to check it out, it didn't give any options, just said the $15/20 options and i clicked continue and it said it successfully registered the services.. yet there was no actual confirmation under confirmation.. hmm.

Yeah I did the same thing, just wanted to see what it was and I somehow ended up registering. Given the ludicrous quality of the rogers website, I'm going to assume that nothing is actually going to come of it.
In the Online self serve, I have noticed today a new link called "Register for Home Calling Zone service". I think this is related to UMA, because when I start the registration process, the URL looks like : https://your.rogers.com/CustomerCare...pperID=xxxxxxx
Here's the description : "Home Calling Zone option allows you to use one Wireless Phone for home and mobile calling – so you can connect with friends the way you want. You can also take advantage of great competitive International Long Distance rates."
In the first steps of the registration, you have to confirm your exact home location for 911 purposes.
Then you are asked to chose between 2 rate plans:
Home Calling Zone Unlimited Local Calling $15
Home Calling Zone Unlimited Long Distance $20
I don't know why I am even responding to your reply, however, the information I provided was a lot more "applicable" and useful than your initial post. You probably clicked the same link and read the exact same thing as OP with a clueless look on your face the whole time.
Oh, you added "UMA" to give him some sort of "help". So it could have gone two ways, he posts a reply asking "what is UMA?" and gets the information, or he searches for "UMA" and finds the same link provided. I just saved him those steps in between by providing him with a link that answers his question.
Tough love, don't step into my kitchen.
Snarky much? Either way you were wrong posting "search much?" as he clearly wouldn't have known to search for UMA. Even after the first response, given that you posted before he had a chance to respond to the thread, you still had no business posting as he may very well have then searched for UMA.
Spoke to Rogers Customer service today. After waiting on hold for several minutes, no one at Rogers Customer Service can explain what this is (date of availability, features, restrictions, etc.)
Was anyone luckier in getting addtional info, beyond the "legalese" of the registration process?

umm because theyre not supposed to & the service isnt launched yet.
ummm...obviously. But then their website shouldn't make mention of it either. Guess it's just another "feature" of their website, in addition to links that end up on blank pages, forms that reset, etc. etc. Rogers needs a webmaster, really bad.

Exactly, I clicked on it thinking I could just hit cancel when I got to the "Confirmation" step, and ended up signing up for it. I assume that nothing will come of it though.
My favorite part of the rogers website is how it makes you sign in multiple times to access different sections. Kind of like how when you call them you need to tell your number and postal code to the automated machine and then again to every rep you speak to.
So i heard from Customer Relations that Rogers is comming out with a Home Zone program, where, you use your internet connection with a wireless router to use in conjunction. Only drawback is that there is 2 phones that will currently work. One was the blackberry pearl with wifi and wasn't sure as of yet of the other phone. He said that the pricing from what he heard is 15 a month and you can call locally unlimited in your calling zone I.E. Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, etc. Kind of perplexed as to how the router will be used if you are like calling from North Vancouver and your Router is in Richmond. And you can make a call to Toronto from the Lower Mainland for example and considered a local call, and, you can call in to a roaming number from toronto and make a local call through the roaming number...Like the good ol' analog days.

Any one can elaborate?
Thanks
From what I understand it's not just your router it's anywhere you can access wifi in your home zone.
The other phone is a Nokia 6086 which looks like the 6085 and will be launching very soon...
I don't think you will be able to use ANY wifi spot but that your account will have to have the router address in it... meaning you will have to call Rogers or go into a dealer store to have a router added to your account.
I'm 99% sure that you won't be able to just connect to any WiFi anywhere without your account being setup for that router...
