    went to www.att.com/activations

added 29.99 200 minute plan < I have no intention of using this as a voice line.

    +

    19.99 media net .

    entered CC info .
total 55 and some change. no contract of course .

    phone was active.

then ,, I switched the sim to an 860 data card and have been using the net all day with 3g speeds.
< using the wap.cingular APN of course. >

    no issues.

They will recognize the IMEI of the data card and turn off your MEdia Net package. Watch online closely.

I wouldn't go overboard with the data usage. I agree with the other poster who says you could get caught.

    Wheee! Data connection!

I may be crazy but perhaps I have an application. You see my place is where there is no cable, no DSL, no wifi operator signal, and little cell signal. All data goes over 24K dialup.

According to AT&T map, we have solid Edge but it is miles to any 3G so forget that. If I want solid signal it really has to be outside or just use N3620.

Theoretically then I could facilitize an old laptop with card and perhaps Linuxrouter and buy myself a connection for only $55 or so a month. How fast is Edge, and do you think keeping it saturated regularly would get it cut off? Maybe if I told them they were replacing Verizon dialup they would let it go?

Yeah I would have done that except you get capped at 5GB a month.

    update :

    OK.

plan has been renewed.. unlimited is still there..

this is what ive done lately ..

    used the 8525 ,

    installed skype.

got the " skype IN " for 8 bucks for 3 months deal . < gives your skype act a # so people can call it.. and NOT use my 200 minutes in my plan >

went over to www.grandcentral.com got assigned a new number... I give THAT number out as my number .

in grandcentral I choose my skype number to ring when the grandcentral number is dialed. < that way Skype on the 8525 rings >

also ,, in grandcentral .. I can place a call to anyone in my contact list and have the grandcentral # show up on thier caller id..

you select a number to dail.. tell it to connect it via the skype number and the skype rings on the PDA .. you answer.. then it rings thru to the number you dailed via grandcentral

same senerio when im at home.. I have skype runing on the laptop the data card is in..

    so basicly unlimited calls.

now . there are minor "kinks" I dont talk via skype while driving.,. due to calls most of the time sounding like crap..

but when stationary.. hard to beat this set up..

Do I have to jump thru a few hoops? yes..

is unlimited internet and virtually unlimited incoming and outgoing calls worth it ? OH YES ...

    clarafication ..

    I have three numbers
my ATT PYP number < place holder for the unlimited data dont use it for calls > $55 a month .
Skype IN number < use it to connect via grandcentral > $8 for 3 months or 2.66 a month.. but must be paid at 8 per 3 months . no one has that number.

Grandcentral .. free.. its my main number , if my PYP CTN changes or my Skype number Changes.. no one will even now or be affected.

    hope this was helpfull.

You can forward GC to GP directly.
In Grandcentral, "gizmo" is a choice in the dropdown menu for a number.
You can enter your GP number, it is SIP protocol and forwards direct from GC.
You do not need to buy a number.
You could accomplish the exact same thing that you are doing for free.

PS: I have not tried this because I do not have a pda/smartphone.
