Wow, this will be interesting. The biggest problem I see is that 90% of Rogers CSR's are so useless you'll get a different explanation every time. I have a $10 Navigate plan that is being discoed, how are they going to deal with that?
If it is true unlimited browsing but only on Rogers IMEI's I can see it being a huge issue for many of us.
If you bought the phone from Rogers, it is in their database. Whenever you connect to the internet, you IMEI is sent to the Rogers Tower and then fed into the system. Based on your IMEI, the billing system will charge you accordingly
Example: You have the 5$ unlim on-device data plan and you own a W580i and a HTC Touch.
When you put your SIM into the w580i, the system recognizes it and doesn't charge you anything extra to access the net. IF you then take the SIM out of the W580i and put it into the HTC Touch, as soon as you try and access the net from that device, it'll send that IMEI for that 'session' and you would be subject to pay-per-use charges (either 5cents/KB or 3cents/KB - not yet released - probably 5cents though)
If you are using a NON-ROGERS phone, The billing system will not know what phone you are using so it assumes you are using a data device and would also be subject to pay-per-use data charges on the $5 Unlim on-device plan. The WM packages will work for non-rogers phones though
Guess this was bound to happen and I am surprised it had not been worked out earlier. For Rogers to offer competitive data plans with their CDMA counterparts, they needed a system which will go against the usually trumpeted GSM norm ( data is data ) and be able to restrict it to particular phones like their CDMA counterparts.
So the IMEI is a possibility, and restricting it to Rogers phones makes it easier ( and maybe cheaper in implementation and execution) for them.
So this will usher in a new era for Rogers regarding permitting the use of non-Rogers phones where some of the Rogers plans ( most likely data plans) will not be available for non-Rogers phones, and I assume the same will likely go for Fido. Look for an update to the regular phone agreements, if there is no clause presently regarding this 'feature'.
After this plan is unrolled, I will have 3 options to consider regarding my cellphone data charges:
a) Keep using my non-Rogers/Fido phones with the 'available' data plans .
b) Purchase a Rogers phone to make use of better data plans
c) Move to another provider which entails getting a new phone.
Is this the same thing that providers in the U.S. use? Why can't Rogers just go T-Mo style

I just found out that rogers is currently discontinuing the htc touch in futureshop and best buy. Does anybody know the reason why? Could this be leading to an iPhone introduction?
As much as people hate hearing about the iphone, lets face it, the iphone would be a cash cow for Rogers. Therefore, one of the biggest reasons why they might be going to the IMEI check based system is to the arrival of Iphone. If you think about it, the unlock iphones would not be able to use the data plan. This would force the iphone users to purchase a Rogers branded iphone instead. It would generate a lot more money by the purchase of Rogers handsets and ultimately forcing those who want data to get Rogers branded phones.

Why would they get rid of the HTC Touch for an iPhone???
I wouldn't be surprised to see the iphone come to Canada with this data plan. the more they wait, the less valuable the iphone is. with the 3g iphoned coming, rogers needs to get it out asap.
why dont they just have a 10$ unlim WAP that also includes 25mb of reg data (emails, html browsing, whatever u want). something like that. its an easy plan... and everyone could be sort of happy with their needs otherwise go to the 1gig plan.
the main issue is there is no medium range plan. $5 for unlim wap is great, and a great move in the right direction for decent data. if they can restrict the IMEIs for just wap, and just rogers devices, then fine, but come out with something for other customers that u have that dont see 65$ as being reasonable for eg only needing 100mb of usage!!!
so when will they potentially start enforcing via IEMI if they do? If they start before the 4th, unlocked phone users could see some hefty unexpected bills.
Also, if it is IEMI based, as long as your IEMI matches is it still "data is data"?
So i made a mistake.. its not a $5 unlim data plan - its a $7 plan.. sorry guys
but your previous $5 unlimited mistake price make more sense, now look at the updated price... Vision Internet Package has the same price plus 2 extra thing...

Just to Follow-up, It is IMEI driven.

Why get rid of a good phone for a toy...
I love my windows mobile phones, especially my tytn, but the iPhone has some really nice features like full browser, threaded SMS and a full iPod. But its not very productive and I miss the office documents and the today screen.

Maybe it's a push to try to get more people on visions phones

This doesn't really mean anything. As far as I know, Best Buy/FS do not carry the entire Rogers handset lineup as it is.
