Text message that shuts off phone

I've gotten text messages that when I try to open the message automatically reset my phone. Anybody have any idea what this is?

What phone are you using? I don't remember off hand, but I believe there are phones that have some kind of bug that can sometimes cause a restart on a txt message.

There also times when a PIX-FLIX (MMS) message could do it with some sort of an attachment, also generally due a bug on a phone. This has come up in various phone-specific threads in some of the VZW phone sub-forums in the past.

That sounds like a somewhat different issue. You might want to take it in and have VZW take a look at it (and maybe even replace it).

I've seen several people with a G' Zone phone do that.

It was on my E815 but it also happened to my friends who had completely different phones so I was curious as to what would cause it

A Coworker had the same issue. He finally got to his NE2 and replaced it.

I had this happen to me on my Chocolate once. It was a text message from a Verizon customer but had the big box with the X through it that meant the text got cut off. It reset my phone every time I looked at it until I finally deleted it.

I remember this happening to people on howardforums a few years ago... what it was then was a corrupted MMS. I don't know if it was a picture or video, but it got corrupted at some point (I think it may have been sent from a PC already corrupted, as opposed to being corrupted somehow in-transit). People were forwarding it to each other as a sort of joke. It'd crash most phones (or, more likely, a particular brand..) and I don't remember, it'd either shut down or reboot. (As long as the phone software crashes rather than locking up solid, some phones reboot or shutdown as a rather heavy-handed but effective last-ditch error recovery.. once the software internal state gets too out of hand, this effectively resets the software to a known-good state.)

Not sure if this is the issue but...You know how people send forwards via text to each other? Well there was one titled, "Haha...I just shut your phone off". So every time you open that text, your phone will restart.
