Charging SE w580i via USB w/o file transfer mode

As the topic implies, I'm looking how to charge my SE w580i via USB withouth going into file transfer mode.

If I only have my USB cable and want to charge the phone via my computer it forces me to go into file transfer mode. Once I do that I can't use the damn thing anymore. If I ignore the prompt it will say it is charging but it doesn't actually do it. I thought it was just slow as it usually is with the USB charge but the phone just died

I'd also like to be able to use USB/Car lighter or USB/wall adaptors but they don't seem to work either. Again the phone prompts me to go into file transfer mode, printing mode, or phone mode. Choosing either of these doesn't work.

I've done a lot of searching and thought maybe a firmware update fixes this but I'm not able to find anything specifically related.

Is this hopeless? Seems like an easy thing to fix or is this just their way to force you to buy their accessories?

I like this phone besides this and the retarded fact that it's nearly impossible to use the phone with one hand.

Try sending a text message while riding your bike or even with a coffee in hand?

haven't tested it with w580i but on my k750i it charges and i can use it =D

go to service menu
on phone push
> * < < * < * go to service tests and change charging to "ON"

should charge through usb.

umm...when you plug it in to your computer, select phone mode and it should work. i've done this with 3 w580's as well as 2 w810's and a w300 and it works on all of them. keeps the phone turned on and charges. it is really slow doing it through the comp, but it does charge.

It's because the usb max Volts is 6 while the wall is 12, so normally i plug my phone into my computer when it's totally dead and it takes about 12hrs to full charge while teh wall only takes like 3 max LOL but i have a K790

Yeah this is already set. It will charge but only if connected to a computer... and then I get the problem of getting thrown into choosing File Transfer/phone/print mode.

select phone mode and it should work

phone mode is for using your phone as a modem or synchronizing contacts etc...

I basically want to be able to charge it with one of these or one of these type thingies.

When traveling I don't want to have to carry 12 different chargers. My GF already uses something similar to this for her iPod. I can also use my crank flashlight to charge things via USB. I guess I'm trying to put the "UNIVERSAL" into USB.

I just thought this might have been an oversight in the design and was hoping this was fixed with some software/firmware updates. I don't know all that much about either but I'm here trying to learn.

it still keeps the phone turned on and allows calls and msg's to come through, which is what you want. and its quite possible that your battery is messed if its not holding a charge. or just carry an extra charger. its not that big a deal.

The phone will charge in file or phone mode. In any case, the phone will only charge to 90% with USB.

Actually you are mistaken. USB spec is +5v +/- 0.25v max 500ma draw. If you have a USB port that is putting out 6v I wouldn't trust it.

and I just hate buying so much crap to carry and eventually throw into the landfill. Yes, I'm a hippie with a cellphone and I try to use a Zen approach and pack light.

glad i could help. and i know all about hating to carry multiple chargers. hate it, but the phone, bluetooth and mp3 player, all use different chargers. arghhh
