Hi I am from Australia with the plan to visit America. I am hoping to do a hike for some months with friends.
I have been told that i can use my iphone 3G on the journey but i will need to organise a sim card in America to then have access to phone and internet which I need to check on my small web biz.
From there I have been told that the iphones have a habit of locking up but I can stop this.
This is a whole new planet for me so if you can shed some light on this I would appreciate it.
Or am i better off buying a cheap phone and internet deal while im in the US?
I will be there for around 4 months - apparently the trail we are doing allows about 70% coverage.
Really appreciate any ideas or help you can offer.

My husband is taking an unlocked iphone 3s to use in France. My only question is do we need a voltage converter for the phone, or is it dual voltage?

You need to look at your wall charger, verify it says 120/240 volts. If yes you will only need and US to Europe travel adapter. I have seen theses at Wal-Mart or the Airport. It does not change the voltage, it only allows the US syle flat blades to plug into the Europe round plugs. I do know that my Iphones 4s does have the dual voltage rating. For the others I am not sure.
You can also buy 120/240 usb Chargers 3rd party that will work.
If your Huband is taking a laptop, verify it is 120/240 and you can use its USB port for charging the phone.
