Maxiumum Text Messaging (SMS) Character Length

Why can't text messages be longer? I am getting a new phone and after looking through the instructions, I noticed my old phone can type more characters. I hate getting cut off mid sentence by the character limit.

I think it would be helpful to new phone purchasers if we compiled a list of the maximum number for SMS characters for each phone. I will start by adding the phones I own. Others should add for different phones they have experience with.

    Audiovox 8615 - 140 characters

    Samsung A640 - 160 characters

    LG 570 Muziq - 140 characters

Yea, I almost don't want to give mine up for my new Lg Muziq that is coming.

Do any of the Virgin phones allow the message to be longer but split up into multiple messages? I know the Audiovox 8615 and Samsung a640 cannot, but not sure about the Muziq since it is still in the mail. I know some phones will split up the message but not sure of which phones.

Can anyone comment on the message length of the Samsung m510 or Motorola Krzr?

If you use Diego and enable EMS on the 6275i, you can sent 904 characters Although I'm quite sure it would get split up into ~5 messages.

Yeah, I think the 6275i does split messages up. I hate hitting the limit though.

On the Razr, with a seem edit, I've boosted the limit from 140 to 450. However, the virgin mobile network doesn't seem to want to accept a short text message that is more than 160 characters long.

So it starts counting down from 450 as I type. 450 - 160 is 290. So I stop typing when the counter goes from 450 to 290. That way I know I've typed 160 characters. 10 more than originally.

    • If anyone is interested i found this info below when surfing the net for a answer the other night, Also anything over 160 characters (Or any maximum below that amount) if and or when sent will be split in to seperate messages up to the maximum chargacters per sms, also do not forget, most messages also count the number you are sending to and your phone number as part of the maximum character count as well.

_____I know this is a bit late, but this is what i found, Now even though the phones allow more than 140 characters, the wireless carriers may not, If anyone is interested i found this info below when surfing the net for a answer the other night, Also anything over 160 characters (Or any maximum below that amount) if and or when sent will be split in to seperate messages up to the maximum chargacters per sms, also do not forget, most messages also count the number you are sending to and your phone number as part of the maximum character count as well.
