Tech support will always want you on BES because that way they have complete control over what you can and can't do on your BB (ie, they can block you from installing programs they don't like, block you from accessing the internet, and they can remotely erase everything on you BB if you get fired/lose it).
Being on BES is very nice.
The best part is that the emails sync so anything you read on your office computer is marked as read on your blackberry..
That way you don't have that unread number always there.. or at least not so big.
Ya, I am on MS exchange Activesync, which is basically the same.
What I like the best is the full folder sync. I love being able to view any item in any of my folders.

Hi Dylan, I think you're confusing your Roger's BES experience with everyone else's corporate environment. Not all of those corp. environments allow for external POP3/IMAP email access to their emails so BIS will NOT always work as you have proclaimed.
In many instances, email can ONLY be accessed internally through an intranet or secure extranet portal. BIS doens't accommodate such scenarios unless the IT dept. extends that access

No no, I was not trying to say it would Always work, I was just saying that he Assumed that he couldn't use BIS because he read here that he needed BES to access his corp Email. That of course is not true.
And then he asked his tech support if he could use it and they said he couldn't, but most tech support reps will say that. 95% of the time it is not true.
I am just saying, don't assume. Most corporate Email can be accessed on BIS, despite what most people seem to think.
I have seem many people that were told they couldn't, set up on BIS with no hassles (as have you I'm sure).
He said will get his Pearl2 soon and try it out. Care to place any money on whether it will work or not?

The new BB plans will allow tethering as well as generic data usage from BB - ability to run all data apps on a BB. Everything data you ever wanted to do on BB would work, including tethering.
This is because the 25MB/$60 (and 200MB/$100) is reportedly being grandfathered, and thus the same capabilities are being transferred to the new BB plans.
Yes it is somewhat more expensive to tether on the BB plans than the non-BB, but Rogers let's you tether on any BB plan (except $15 email-only plan). That's the way it has been for approximately a couple years now, any generic non-BB data or tethering you do on a BlackBerry, deducts from the BlackBerry data. In fact, you can even use a BlackBerry SIM in another device and it still deducts from the BlackBerry data bucket. It wasn't like this three years ago, but that's the way it has been working lately. So a primary BlackBerry user can occasionally slip the SIM card into a different device, use the internet.com APN. The sole exception is the $15 unlimited email-only BlackBerry data plan, which behaves very differently.
Basically, the BB data plans is a data superset of the non-BB data plans: Basically regular data AND BlackBerry data (all kinds: both BIS and BES). Of course, this excludes the other $15 unlimited email-only plan, which is different.
Worldwide, in recent years, it has been generally a fact that all plans capable of "BIS/BES" are ALWAYS a data superset of generic data plans. Basically, BB sim cards with full-fledged "BIS/BES" capability (no BES limitation), can be used by any individual in any cellphone for generic data too, at least if they choose not to join a BES. The limitations often apply only to BIS-only or email-only plans.
Ideally, the plans should have been equallized in price (same price for BB and non-BB) to make it much less confusing to customers. BB does include compression for in-device BB-branded email and BB-branded mobile browsing, which does compensates somewhat.

$7 unlimited mobile browsing users on non rogers phones won't see charges until after these new data plans are in effect.
then they will be charged based on these tiers.
so all these people saying they haven't been charged for browsing on opera mini, etc won't see it until these data charges are official.
i think someone posted something along the lines that rogers doesn't have the billing sorted out for $7 u/l browsing until mid march.. which coincides with these new data plans.

When they say that "all existing plans will be grandfathered" I'm assuming they mean that everyone will keep their original plan unless they specifically request to be transferred to the new data plans? I am concerned about the $15 Personal Email Plan. Under the new regime will it cease to exist?

in the first post it said that the new plans would not conflict with the $20pack. I assume that is so that you can have the unlim browser (when u are on wap) and ALSO add this new data plan for tethering or sim swapping to a pda etc... thats decent news.
but, what of any one on an older VP (with 5mb 10mb etc... of usage). would that just add to your bucket, or will those packs in fact conflict. im sure we have no official info, but any ideas?
I just switched back to Rogers today after a short period with telus. I was on the Telus $15 ul data plan but things were lacking with bb telus that was bothering me. First off they are still missing the loved curve and prob won't get it for another couple of months. Secondly, telus bb's don't do mms at all. Third and one of my biggest pet peev is the 140 character limitation for sms.
For now I got ul data again for the first three months at the 50% discount price of $30. Once that's over I'll be going on the new plan which although not as cheap as the telus plan is a definate improvement and one that I can now live with.
ditto.
i just called in rogers, got a very nice rep, got a HUP even through my confusion, curve at $299.
data for $30 3 months, unlimited, then going to switch over to new plans.
thanks for the inside info as always HoFo!

Past experience shows they will conflict, leaving you to choose one or the other, not both.
