An improvement. At least there's not countless mystery tiers and the amount of massive confusion that the old plans had. Consumers can actually understand this now.
I suspect that the Blackberry users are going to be curious why they get less MB for the same amount of money. Many people don't understand the data compression reasoning likely behind this, so the uninitiated will likely be a bit grumpy about it.
I still find the $50 cost of the 60-500 meg plan a bit high for my tastes, as I suspect many others will. It would be nice to see another tier in there somewhere that led to a 200-500 meg plan somewhere in the $35'ish range. The jump to $50 to get at least 500 megs still leaves allot of people who need an amount of data in that range paying quite allot for it.
Myself, for example - with an iPhone, there's no way 60 megs is even remotely adequate for a months worth of usage.
But all that said, Boo-Hiss on the 3 year contracts.
However I really wish there were something they could offer on month to month. I am trying my hardest to avoid resigning but darnit, Rogers makes it so difficult sometimes!
I got super excited at first...thought about finally taking the plunge and buying some sort of data device (Samsung i616 maybe?) for a decent price on eBay, to avoid the HUP renewal, and when I read that I could even KEEP my $20 CVP, I got even more excited...and then I read the 3YR ONLY BS...GAH, foiled again!

Don't get me wrong, I still think that Rogers is targetting the majority of people to be in the $50 dollar range 60M to 500M, but they have the piece of mind that if they exceed that range, it's $10 dollars.
Unless I am wrong?
I was making a point that in the end Rogers is making a killing no matter how you look at it.....and with this new tier plan people are fooled into a false sense of savings over old plans/rates....looks like Rogers did their job right.
I understand and agree with your point. With this said, I can still see why people are happier with a right fit approach to data as opposed to giving up the first-born overage rates, if this is in fact what it is.
portable internet does not use the cellular network, it runs of different equipment attached to the cellular network (something like wimax, but not quite). and you cannot use it while mobile, the portable modem must be stationary to aquire a signal.

Precisely. It appears obvious to me that they want 50 bucks from most. For that, they should include all extra features like what Telus' Unlimited 45 does.
But, they probably won't, looks like Telus will stay the data visionary.

Bunk. I used it while mobile for many months.
It works fine while driving, but the pass-offs from tower to tower can sometimes drop the signal for a few seconds. No biggie.
Although this should be split off into a separate topic, I do often wonder why wireless data on the Rogers Portable side is $45 for 30 gigs, but wireless data on the cellular side is $65 for 1 gig.
Yes, yes...one is quasi-WiMax, and the other cellular data, but if you look at it in simplistic terms - data is going from a device to the tower - it's pretty much the same thing, with some technical differences. At the tower level I very much doubt that the data doesn't share the same connection to the internet regardless if it came from a laptop using the Portable Internet modem, or a PC card on the cellular side - it all very likely travels in the same pipe to the WWW.
To stay on the subject, I like this announcement (if it's true) very much, especially that I just acquired a Samsung BlackJack II that is on it's way. I was unfortunately considering to leave out the data plan, but with these plans, I might get tempted.

That is what it is about.. fooling people and giving them false illusion of options and value. The same suits that justify the SAFs as business as usual..
Unlimited blackberry plan
Unlimted WM plan..
How hard is that?
How about making it simple for their CSRs and clients and just making unlimited data plans?... How about tiered plans with a final unlimited plan being offered? Instead of it going on and on and on.. It doesn't make sense not to offer a simpler solution to clients when many are BEGGING for it..
.. And as the wise Judge Judy says " If it doesn't make sense, it's not true"
Its the continued feet dragging that will get them nowhere in the long run and keep on creating resentment and the perception that they are gouging.
Also, the people that say " well its better than nothing." and " we should be happy to have what they give us.. ..I don't think that is the attitude to have when its clear to everyone...including lawmakers that things need to change big time.. They can offer more and should offer more..any thing that is below unlimited data plans for a good price..is pandering.
All 5 US wireless companies are now offering unlimited data and voice plans.. Its not a matter of scale or geography and that they can offer better because they have more.. What ever happened to relativity?..Rogers also doesnt have to support 65 million customers like At&t does..or all the costs that are included with that many people on your network...or as many towers etc etc.. its not like they are putting towers on Baffin Island ..where they have to fly by helicopter to service them every week.. Come on!.
I like the new data plans. I think this is a step in the right direction for Rogers. Immediately I wanted to switch but then I looked at my data usage for last month. 14mb puts me into the $30 bracket. With my current Personal BB Email I hope I can ride the free Opera Mini wave until it's closed and then change over to the new plans.
Effective March 18th 2008
-------------------------
Unlim WAP = $7
Unlim Vision WAP = $7 - 3 yr term with DECF
Blackberry Data Plan - 3 yr term with DECF
$15 - 10MB BIS/BES ~ Tier 1
$30 - 10MB to 50MB BIS/BES ~ Tier 2
$50 - 50MB to 200MB BIS/BES ~ Tier 3
$65 - 200MB to 500MB BIS/BES ~ Tier 4
$0.05 per additional MB
Finally. Just about time - around what I expected. Rogers will earn a little less from me since I'm one of the few on the $100 BlackBerry plan -- but at least I won't be switching to Bell as I would have if Rogers did nothing when the BlackBerry 9000 series comes out (rumored to be around this time). Yes, Rogers will finally lock me into one of their famous 3-year terms - so be it - if it's the only way to get this plan. Right now I am no-contract on an unlocked BlackBerry.
Data overages at 5 cents a megabyte. I remember when it used to cost 5 cents a kilobyte for domestic usage.
