A CS rep just told my girlfriend that if you download something to your cell, you are charged data regardless of whether you have the UMB feature or not.

    Can anyone confirm this?

I've been on the $7 plan since Feb 12th. I bit the bullet to see what would happen. It was well worth it as you can see for me. I did this only because I was working in a remote area with limited internet access.

The phone is an unlocked AT&T RAZR2 V9 used on Fido. Websessions has been modified and has been using the APN "internet.fido.ca" and proxy set to 205.151.11.11 (port 80).

    Apps used:
    1. Built-in browser
    2. Opera Mini
    3. Google Maps
    4. GMail App (not via web browser)

** NOTE: As the time I was using it, they did not have IMEI or browser type tracking so this may not work next month. I am limiting my usage in anticipation of getting screwed over. **

For anyone wondering, it's easy enough to find out what phone you have. It doesn't even have to be Fido... If you go to a site such as http://www.google.com/gmm to try downloading Google Maps, it identifies your phone type. It's not necessary to track by IMEI. I know for Motorolas, there is a SEEM (anyone modding their Moto knows what I'm talking about) that contains the phone type. In my case, it's "MOTORAZRV9". I don't have a SEEM map in front of me so I can't say which one it is but I believe the identifier inside is exactly the same.

I've fooled the Fido servers into thinking I had a RAZR V3 before the V3i or V3t was on the market. I had to do this as their main site wasn't properly able to ID my phone and sent me to a generic, low graphics page. This was the only way I was able to access some parts of the Fido site (and get some Fido provided Java apps).

I only know how to do this on Motorolas. And no PMs, please... Just look for xlr8's SEEM map.

Shown below is my invoice and also my data transmission details. I love online billing...

The first 2 data charges (FEB 7 and FEB 8) were at 5c/KB. This was under the rate "OD". The charges since activating the $7 unlimited plan have incurred no charges and are under the rate "KB".

I am so confused about surfing with my Pearl 8100 on Fido

I just bought an unlocked 8100 and put my SIM card into it and the phone works fine.

However I cannot get the browser to work. I have an unlimited internet plan from Fido in Canada.

I do not know what to enter in the default Browser configuration.

I was told that I needed to set up GPRS/EDGE with a username and password I was given However I can't find where to put those.

I need as well to configure Dialup Access. I have a code/number to put there but again I can't find where to enter it.

Lastly DNS I need to enter the primary and Secondary numbers and again I do not know how to do that.

So if anyone is willing to help out it would be greatly appreciated.

    Woof (Thanks)

LOL come on now, you cannot use a $7 plan on a blackberry! Did you even bother to read the thread? Or any of the others?

    FIDO $40/4GB BYOD
    PUBLIC $38/4GB BYOD
WIND $15 AITF unlimited data (10GB full speed)

All my posts are my own opinion only and not necessarily that of any of my employers, past or present.

I've read a bunch of threads and I havent found the answer to my question, but sorry in advance if this was already posted before.

I just got a Nokia 6300 and I did a full factory reset using NSS (to use mp3 ringtones). Anyway, I was wondering if that makes a difference at all whether or not I can use the Unlimited Surfing Option without getting charged extra?

Does anyone really know how this system charges phones? I have a nokie E62 with this option, and did a lot of data traffic outside of the built-in browser (and lots more in the browser) and I see no overage.

I did read in another thread that the system looks at the browser version and determines it that way. Could this mean that if the windows mobile browser or flags usage through usb or bluetooth port, it bills that data?

I would also like to see this "quote" where the E62 was mentioned as well. It seems the E62 is like a ******* phone forgotten by fido... i guess they feel bad for how slow it is.

Perhaps you somehow missed out on the literally DOZENS of posts in all the other threads explaining that nobody will be charged properly until APRIL.

Until end of April bills come in, there's no point in asking any more questions here.

I always travel arround the world and buy prepaid gsm card and take 10 euro unlimited browsing, then i plug my sim in my 3g wm6 phone and use it as internet phone and watch movies even download traffic using tomtom gps maps, i never get charged 1 penny. even in France Orange told me its limited to mobile browsing only and i did the same thing. i never got charged for that but they had in there agreement its limited to 200mb/ month.
for my opinion i think there is no way to detect if we are using rogers or fido browser or the phone type, unless they want to play it nasty and mark all unrigistered imei in there database, in that case cloning IMEI will become popular. unless you grab an old nokia 3 years ago.

i traveled in whole Europe and all of them has 10 euro max some of them 5 euro unlimited browsing and internet i have no clue why here we are always limited.

i got rid of the browsing

I do understand the argument that data is data... but i wouldnt be the least bit surprised if they figure out data usage through a ghetto wap browser and something else. With overage being at $50 a MB, I am not taking a gamble with that since no one really knows just how its going to go down. I will be sure to check in to see if people get burned or not. You just cant trust canadian telcom carriers.

I got an unlocked rogers blackberry and i am using it on fido network,
i have no blackberrry plan so i have no service book installed and i am not allowed to use any BB Service which i never need.
i installed Opera wap browser then msn and google talk , and used it without activating any blackberry expenaive plan and i nver receive a charge for that neither.

the only way to monitor this is by consumption as its gonna be a headeack for them and lot of problems,

i see no reason why rogers or fido have to go after end user and play police for couple of MB of usage as already in there statistics data usage on their networks are very low due to the expensive plans and unreasonable they have, they charge end user same prices as enterprise for data as if data is only for businessman in their opinion.

rogers finished implementing the new HSDPA 7Mb/sec and waiting for the devices to come but the backbones are up and runing ready for that speed, i do not think all this to go after the kb user will use over web or wap.

all of us guys good luck in testings and i welcome the new pland for unlimited broswer as it has to be done long time ago in Canada which exist long time ago in the USA and all Europe.

the best part is in france under the terms of the unlimited plan they wrote clearly that you are not allowed to use newsgroup neither VOIP as the ports are blocked, while rogers and all other canadian wirless provider are blocking VOIP PORTS, without any notice for there customer they keep it for you as a surprise to figure out.

    HAPPY MOBILE BROWSING EVERYBODY.

Starting the 15th of April, the business rules around the Unlimited Surfing on your Fido option will be enforced by the billing system. Customers having those options on incompatible devices (Grey market devices, Blackberry devices, Nokia E62, all other PDA's or Windows Mobile phones) or using their handset for other than WAP browsing will be billed on a pay-per-use basis. (This means using the WAP gateway. Whether a webpage is displayed in WAP or HTML is completely irrelevant as long as you're using the proper device)

Nothing more to say. It's clear as day. Regards.

technically how this system will recognize which type of device you are using beside the imei logged on the network.

how the system know if i have a krzr or a nokia e62 beside the imei?

Well, I got my new statement and I'm sharing my findings. My last statement was in post #32. Pretty much the same sort of usage as before. So far, still no charges. Doesn't seem like IMEI tracking is being done as of yet. But looks like I should find a better text plan.

There is a reason why you haven't been billed yet even if you are using internet.fido.ca and not wap.fido.ca and it is because all the system will start billing pay-per-use tomorrow for the incompatible handsets or usage of the wrong APN.

I might be wrong if they delay it, but no one is getting through the cracks... It is meant not to be billed.
