I got my N95-4 yesterday, to replace my Motorola V3xx. This is my first S60 (or smart Nokia in general.) I'm pleased with the slider tightness and don't have any issue with light leakage. It's a smidge thick but okay. Annoying interface but hopefully I'll either learn it or tune it over time.
But why is this dawg so slow? Especially J2ME applications, but even the native browser, things just respond extremely slowly at times. How can I tell what's going on?
Other S60-newbie questions:
How do I put a J2ME app in the background?
How do I see what is currently running (and kill them)?
First off, there's no comparison between this and the Razr.. It's night and day. Second, it's not slow at all.. Try doing a Hard Reset [reformat] :
Type *#7370#
Code 12345
See if that works! The one thing I absolutely LOVE about the N95 series is almost NO LAG in opening applications!! Especially the 8GB version.. it's press-bam-open!
To check running apps in the background press and hold the menu button..
The OS will take some getting used to.. I'm new to it and learning.. But, let me tell you.. the more you get to know about Symbian the more you'll realize it's potential ! I absolutely hated Symbian when I got my first Nokia [6682] but as I played with it and read HoFo.. I picked up alot and realized it's an amazing OS

To put an app in the background press the menu key twice quickly
Try Handy Taskman, which allows you to handle running applications, or you could hold the menu key down for a second or two, a list will apperar on the top left. pressing C will close the app..

Don't know about that whole "night and day" stuff. Maybe you should use a V3xx
But mine N95 seems slow, and I can't imagine why I'd need to reformat it a few hours after getting it! I will give the learning curve time, just amazed at the apparent lack of speed.

Oh trust me.. I've owned pretty much all moto's since Startac Just can't list'em all here.. When I said 'night and day' I wasn't referring to the response time.. I was referring to the overall feature pack and price to benefit ratio..
you need handy taskman for sure. but just hold down the menu key to see running apps. pressing menu key twice minimizes any app to the background. cant imagine why your new phone would be slow.

It will seem slow due to the fact you were using a "dumb" phone.
Of course they are faster..
However if you think this is slow, try using an older S60 phone..
Exactly. The N95 is a very fast phone in comparison to older S60 devices. I doubt there's anything wrong with the OPs phone, that's just the way smartphones are.
If you want slow try using a WM device for a day and watch that beast hog itself down to no resources and then lag like you never seen before! Nokias a actually very snappy and the N-series are great.
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.” -- Thomas Jefferson, 1802
My N95-4 was slow responding when I first received it. After a couple soft reboots its definitely faster than the N95-3.
I've noticed the N95-3 and -4 both got faster after a Hard Reset ... No idea why..
So that's what I do.. when I receive a new N95 [received a few so far in exchanges ] the first thing I do is a Hard Reset.. then go on to install apps..
RE: I've noticed the N95-3 and -4 both got faster after a Hard Reset
What is Hard Reset doing?
I had a problem with new N95-4 after I installed tons of software on both phone memory and mass memory partitions. The phone simply did not want to boot. It said "Start-up failed. please contact reseller". I was so upset since I had this problem before with another Nokia smartphone (7610) and I had to send it to Nokia to repair. I called Nokia technical support level 2 and all they could suggest is to try soft and hard reset codes. That did not work because phone was locked with that error message. So Nokia again advised me to send the phone back However, I found online that you can actually reset phone when it's booting: press *3 and green button and then press power button. it reset the phone to initial factory? settings.
But I am still not sure what is the
difference between soft reset, hard reset, and the method I used.

Very useful! I had no idea that the camera was still running, or that "standby" was an application that could be put in, well, standby!
