Did you ever solve this problem? Your post was in 2008. You've probably been through several new phones by now!

But in case anyone else wants to replace the cracked front plate on their phone, I just did it and it was much easier than I thought. Amazon sells new front plates very cheaply. Get one of these delivered (took 48 hrs).

Turn off the phone. Using your fingernail, slide it under the narrow bevel around the edge of the front plate and peel it upwards. It is glued on with strong glue. Peel both sides of the bevel up from the bottom and it will detach at the top (take care not to break two small lugs at the top above where the camera lens is). Put the bevel to one side.

Using your fingernail (or I used a guitar plectrum which makes it much easier), slide under the base of the front plate and lever gently upwards. It is also glued on firmly. It will peel off (possibly in sections if badly cracked). Remove the plate completely.

Unpack the new plate and holding it just on the edges so you don't touch the glue, peel off the white section of paper from behind the window. Peel off the plastic coating from the front of the plate. Position the new plate exactly where the old one was, taking care to line it up over the camera lens, and press firmly.

Fit the bevel back in place by firstly inserting the two small lugs at the top into the holes in the top of the front casing. Then press the sides of bevel into place. Jiggle it a little so the bottom of both edges fit flush. There should be enough glue left to hold it in place.

Job done. Hope this helps others if anyone out there still has one of these old phone working.
