I found the problem - too many network connections. I'll post a new thread advising other people on what to look out for.

I just got my XV6800 yesterday.
I installed the activesynch application included on the CD and followed all instructions to the T !
The only thing I am able to get to occur is charging of the handset via the USB.
Activesynch is unable to recognize that the phone is even there , BUT, Windows XP Pro (sp2) does recognize that the device is plugged in.
I stayed up fairly late last night fiddling with settings. I am a full local admin on all my machines, including the freshly hand-reloaded laptop that I tried the same thing on and am still unable to get this work!
On my main desktop machine, which the vast majority of the work was done on, one time and one time only was I able to get it to associate with the device, but, it didn't successfully synch, but now shows the device in the list!
Any help or direction anyone can provide me with is appreciated!
BTW, no special security or firewall apps are running on any of these machines!
Thank you!

I have this problem periodically. I uninstall the device driver from my computer device manager. When I replug the phone back in, it reinstalls the driver and active sync works. My backup procedure before I figured this out was to sync using the bluetooth connection.
