    Enabling 850 MHz on P910i

I have always liked SE's pda's. I actually started with the original Ericsson R380 World. Then the P800, and then P910.

The biggest disappointment for me has always been the fact that SE's nice PDA's are always made for Europe and ASIA, but never for USA. I sure wish there was a P910a, P990a, and a P1a. But no luck. The Xperia X1 will be quite a relief! But in the meantime........

Is there a way to get into the phone and change the bandwith from 900 to 850? Even if it is adding the 850 MHz along with the 900/1900 MHz. I could use T-Mobile, but is does not have quite the coverage that ATT/Cingular has, and I live in the country. I have had to obtain the el-cheapo J220a, just to be connected. Then when I go to the city I switch to the P910i, for which signal strength sux big time.

Can someone please help?! I know the guys on modmymoto have done it to their L7's and such.

Can't be done unless you add an 850 antenna and tell the phone to use it (not so simple)- The motorolas that can be hacked to enable a frequency already have for example, a quadband chip, but only 3 or 2 bands were enabled.

In other words, the phone was already a quadband, but you had to tell the phone to enable the missing band.

I've never seen that on any other phone except Motorolas

There is a P910a. I have one, actually. Why don't you just get one of those?

The P910i that I own was actually advertised as a P910a, only to find otherwise when it arrived. I was pissed! But I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it, so i kept it. It was only with time that I started getting tired of suffering the dropped calls and no signals in certain pockets of the city. Then when I got a job in a factory located in the countryside, I had to just park it as a museum gem.

I am now looking at the P1, but alas! It is a P1i, with no 850 MHz. Is there a way to mod the P1i? Maybe find an old P910a, or one of those K models, or the W's and use their antenna chips? Would there be compatibility issues? Has anybody tried it?

It would really be great if someone knowledgeable in the phone electronics field could try this and see how it works. Or if they can get the parts specifications from such resources as EE Times' Under the hood and research the practicality of an antenna chip swap.

I am willing to spend another $200 just to have a fully functional and reception/sigal strength dependable P1a .
