Can I swap sim cards between phones?

    Hi Everyone!

I found this great resource a week or so ago and have been reading for ages!

I currently have a Treo 650 that I use for work...no data email....just the PDA features.

I was wondering...if I get a new phone with a 64k sim card like my treo has, can I swap between phones by just swapping the sim card?

There are times, like while camping, I would not want to take the PDA but be able to just put the card in another phone and be able to use it.

    Thanks in advance

    Regards,

    Mike

yes of course, that's the whole point of gsm. you can swap your sim to a crap phone for camping trips, and then swap it back for work. swap the sim 10 times a day if you wish. everything will work on each phone.

Is this true with the iphone as well? can you pop the SIM out of the iphone and use it in a "junk phone" for example, as often as you wish?

iPhone is a bit different (of course!). You have to get your SIM with the iPhone and that can be used in any other phone, but you cant use any SIM in an iPhone (unless you mod it).

yeah the iphone is one of the only gsm phones that kinda has its own plan in a way. but its still swappable with sim card. and i guess black berry phones use the BB server so that's a little different. but still swappable. gsm FTW!

One thing to note with the iPhone is that there have been reports that, if you swap to another phone, data will not work on the second phone. An iPhone data plan will only work on an iPhone. You can swap all you want, but only voice and possibly SMS will work on the other phone.

The other handset caveat rests with Blackberries. If you want to switch SIMs between regular handsets and Blackberries, you will need to get a Blackberry data plan.

Left: iPhone 5s on T-Mobile. Right: Comcast home internet connection.
