    Nokia 5310 on T-Mobile unbranding

I bought a 5310 last night from T-Mobile. When I asked them if Opera Mini, Google Mail and Google Maps would work, they assured me they would even though I knew they wouldn't. I called T-Mobile support to see if they could help even though I knew they wouldn't. Their solution? Use their email application to send receive email at 15 cents a pop.

That's when T-Mobile became my nemesis. First thing to do is to backup your settings the the micro sd card (this is important, I'll explain later). Then you'll need to change the product code on the phone itself. I'm not sure if this forum allows me to link to such software. Let me know.

Using the software, set it up as a Virtual USB Device. Connect the phone and Scan. Once scanned, press read and check the Product Code. Change it to 0551710 and press Write. If you don't have a red phone, you may need to google a bit for the right color. I think the only thing different is the phone's default theme colors. Once written close the software.

Next, open NSU and update the firmware for the phone. NSU will say it's up to date. Choose re-install and go make a snack.

Lastly, once the phone is reflashed, you'll be greeted to the sweet sound of freedom. The Nokia bootup tone (instead of the orwellien t-mobile tone). Congrats. You're almost there.

Restore from the backup you made so that t-zones connectivity configuration can be restored. Now, browse your apps. Be amazed at what the rest of the world gets by default. Opera Mini. Sensor. WidSets (AWESOME app btw). Download Google Maps and Mail from mobile.google.com.

It's truly amazing how different the land of the free has become.

Instead of wasting all that time and effort why didn't you just buy a unbranded one from Nokia, they offer free 2nd day shipping and most of the time they give really good discounts on the price of the phone!!!!And you are not stuck with that cheesy T-mobile logo on the front of the phone!!!

Because I didn't think of that. I'm an idiot. Feel free to mock me.

Edit: really honestly. I was in the T-mobile store. I never thought about buying it from Nokia. I did look at prices for the 5320 in Thailand but that was too expensive. For a guy who is smart enough to figure all that crap out is still dumb enough not to think of buying it from Nokia. This is the story of my life.

How do you buy it from Nokia? If you select U.S.A. as your location, it doesn't seem to give you an option to buy. Do you do it by checking Europe? Will Nokia do the currency conversion and mail to U.S.?

I believe it can. This thread describes a similar procedure for the 6133: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1219463.

All you need to do is go to Nokia USA and just get the customer service number and call, just tell them that you would like to purchase a phone, just that easy, they take your order and that is it,also if you ask they sometimes will send you like a car charge or something like that it all depends on who you talk to and how generous a mood the person that is taking the order is at the time!!!

Most likely a 850Mhz version (5310b) if you are buying from Nokia USA.

Unbranding usually works with EDGE/2G phones (5300b, 5310b, 6133/6126, and etc) but definitely does not work with 3G phones. I screwed up an AT&T branded 6555b by death phone flashing.
