To me its a matter of principle. I was on pay per month basis last year and stupidity led me to renew my contract for 3 years... again. I never got anything out of it as well so here's another kick in the nuts. Having contract free is a very good feeling. Having not tied down, no commitments. Or maybe im just not the commitment type .

A few tidbits about the upcoming iPhone 3G launch have trickled out this week, though unfortunately, none of them are particularly illuminating, taken individually.

Perhaps the most interesting one--if only for its lack of details--is the memo distributed to Apple Retail employees this week in FAQ-style concerning the July 11th launch of the iPhone 3G.

Employees are being instructed to answer "I don't know" to any number of pertinent questions surrounding the launch, such as how the in-store activation process will work, any upgrade offers from the original iPhone, or any planned price cuts to the iPod Touch.

AppleInsider reported that Apple is planning meetings for July 6 with its retail staff, presumably to share these details, once the company has finalized its plans.

Last year, the actual time of the iPhone launch was subject to much speculation until Apple finally settled on its "Happy Hour with the iPhone" plan.

This year, it seems a late-afternoon or early-evening start would mean a long night for employees trying to process in-store activations, so a rumor that sales would begin at 8:00 a.m. circulated on the pages of The Boy Genius Report. That remains unconfirmed, but it makes some sense, if in-store activations take several minutes to process, as expected.

Another huge difference between last year's iPhone launch and this year's is the number of countries participating in the launch of the iPhone 3G. We got some sense of what the iPhone 3G is going to cost overseas, with Orange in France declaring Thursday that the iPhone 3G versions would respectively cost 149 euros and 199 euros, or $232 and $310.

The European carriers seem to be offering upgrade paths for original iPhone owners, something that AT&T has not mentioned in its prelaunch marketing.

One last tidbit comes out of Spain, where Telefonica has apparently received 300,000 preorders for the iPhone 3G.

Demand for the first-generation iPhone in Europe was sluggish, but the addition of the 3G networking chip might have changed the minds of cell phone buyers on the continent. If Spain's pent-up demand is any indication, Apple should do pretty well with iPhone 3G sales.
Take note of the bolded part...

Because they will most likely ONLY allow you to go on 3 year contracts with the new iPhone specific plans. I for one, want to keep my cheap F2F including unlimited F2F SMS ! I don't want no stinkin charge for SMS. I only SMS my GF about 1700 - 2000+ SMS per month and i like that's currently free with my plan. I would gladly add the 30$ for unlimited data (and not 300MB) but there is no way in hell i'm loosing my current plan.

Yes, i too would rather buy the phone using my Fido dollars and then cancel my contract and use it with my current SIM and F2F plan. If Robbers/Fido think they can force my hand into a contract, they better rethink their strategy.

its funny looking around this forum full of posts by people thinking that they actually 'call the shots'
ex - "if they think im cancelling my $15 rentention plan for this, they have another thing comin!"

    I agree but also disagree

I really need to replace my factory unlocked w810 but not willing to sign a contract for 3 years, maybe 2 max.

My 2 year contract is almost up, and I have a $10 retention plan, so I'm not sure I would stay with Fido if im not locked in when my contract/retention plan is up. I'm hoping the iphone voice plan restrictions arn't too bad/2yr contract is possible -- if thats the case I'll be lining up on the 11th, otherwise I guess I will shop the anti-iphone deals that should pop up on cdma.

WOW, you should get a CDMA phone from Bell. Fido was all about FREEDOM. They didn't have contracts like the other carriers, their phones were cool, cheap and advanced at the same time. We, the ones who complain now about BS like 3 year contracts were here eons ago when Fido was still a decent carrier. All that's left of Fido now, are those great plans we still use with no contract. You're either a new Fido user or just used to paying through the nose for your cell.. prolly an old Bell/Robbers user.

Been a fido customer for 5 years (longer if you count payg). Sure it would be great in an ideal world to get to keep your old plan's and get the new innovative phones...but you just have to realize its just not a reality...

basically im saying you can't have your cake and eat it to...so be extremely greatful your still getting that cheap deal from years ago, but at the same time dont come on here and expect to be given any favours from them.

Do you work for Robbers by any chance ? You could really make a good PR.

Yes, i CAN have my cake an eat it too ! There are at least 2 new GSM/3G wireless carriers coming in the next years and while Robbers can try and force my hand now, there is no way in hell i'm signing on a 3 year contract with them with a crazy a** 60$+ per month charge that doesn't even include unlimited data like in the states !! I'm not clinically insane, i what I'll do instead, I'll buy the iPhone with a new SIM from Fido, activate it on the spot with the 3 year contract, then right after i will request to CANCEL my 3 year contract and shove my old SIM in there and use it with it. Once the competition will get here with cheaper prices for voice/data, I'll switch ASAP. I've been a loyal Fido user since 1999 because they were the only GSM carrier, because they had AWESOME plans and prices and because they didn't require contracts. Right, now all these things are gone but i have no choice as there is no other GSM carrier to go to. I'm sure i'm not the only one out there in this situation.
