The problem is; is that the map it's showing your location on is Google Maps - which has to be downloaded over the air whenever you check it... When you scroll the map over, you are downloading more data... When you switch to satellite view - you are downloading more data...
Yes, but does the "GPS" aspect really add on any data requirement, assuming you don't have to have a moving picture of exactly where you are at all times?
You know, at the risk of being burned at the stake, I'm just going to come out and say it: these plans are not THAT bad. We already knew iPhone users were going to be paying ~$90/mo, and that is indeed correct. 400mb is a lot of data, really. Yeah, it would have been great if it were unlimited, but frankly, I will only be happy with an unlimited plan if it's applicable to ALL devices, not just one.
I think the only truly disappointing thing about the plans is the lack of flexibility. Someone like myself could NOT subscribe to any of these. I need Rogers-to-Rogers and unlimited incoming; that is where the bulk of my minute usage can be found. These plans include neither. It would have been nice if, like BB/WM plans, you could tack on any voice plan to any theoretical iPhone data plan.
But I digress, if people want a premium device, pay for it. I don't get all the whining.
If you don't like these plans, y'all have another option you know. Buy an unlocked first gen iPhone, put a $20 voice plan on it, the $50 flex rate, and the $15 smartphone value pack and you're on your way.
We all need to band together and send a generic email to Rogers stating how we feel....I wonder if I can write one up and create a site people can get togehter and follow my lead? Something needs to be done....
Well, I agree. Emails need to be sent. Start with the press contact, since she would be gauging the reaction. Congratulate them on ruining the experience for everyone.
edit: but remember IF you send an email, that it should be worded in a professional manner.. Sending an email that includes "WTF you guys are on crack" doesn't get anyone anywhere.
I'd also start emailing apple canada with the same message.
I guess I'll be waiting for some GSM competition and a little reality to be injected into this country. I was all excited about the iPhone, but not under the conditions that Rogers/Fido offer. I can only hope that Shaw goes GSM and offers the iPhone in a nice bundle with the rest of my Shaw stuff - cable, internet, local phone.
The good news is that I save on my ECF with Telus.
Just grab the first generation iPhone before their prices go up (and they will). You can always use it on a good voice plan and just add the $30/300MB data package. This way you have a fully functional iPhone at a fraction of the price (sans GPS and 3G of course)... I am sure glad I didn't dump my first gen when Apple announced that Rogers would be carrying the 2nd gen, people were selling their unlocked first generation phones as low as $330.
I just got an IM from a hofo member saying that we might be getting charged for data running non-rogers phones (1st gen iphones) on the $30 300mb plan....what the hell....I need to call rogers.
I will keep my HTC Touch and my $7 unlimited web/email with Bell. Costing me $40/month all in including voice, caller id, $7 data, weeknights and weekends, voicemail, system fees, etc.
let's see...will I pay $100+ or $40?
Rogers really ruined the IPhone experience for seasoned hofo users.
The only part of that I don't like is the Touch. If I can pay $200 for the Diamond and get all that for $40 then it will be game over for my Rogers account.
... or I will just get another 1st gen iPhoen and be happy with that.
I think its your missing some marbles if you think there is anything good about these plans. I was ready to pay about 80 a month for service but that should be with unlimited data and caller id. Who is not going to get caller id?! might as well just have the small plan at 75 and include caller ID. that gives you 150 min what a joke!! so the voice is worth 20 a month and 50 for data?! 400MB?? BS BS BS BS BS
So i guess i'll be waiting in line @ Fido instead of a Rogers store on the 11th.. just for the per second billing which would help I don't mind paying these rates.. again.. it falls within my usage im not one to use data all day everyday.. its a tad expensive but you pay premiun prices for a premium device..
I mean driving a hummer around town don't cost you 40$ to fill up now does it..
Phew! For a minute there I thought I was going to regret having left Rogers for Telus..
I would have loved to have been in the meeting where these plans were decided upon. What research and thinking led marketing to thinking that these plans would fly ?
You gotta figure Telus and Rogers are sighing relief.
Oh well, I guess we all have to wait for the auction to end.. Which BTW is over 4 Billion dollars in bids with several new players and at least one national player..
Rogers had a chance with this one. They totally blew it. Greedy, short-term minded execs really did a disservice to Roger's shareholders and customers.
I hope the blow back is significant. I am 100% sure when/if the new 4th national carrier comes into play..all of a sudden Rogers will offer the plan they should have in the beginning.
My 1.5 years left with Rogers cannot come any sooner. I literally had $337.87 in my drawer, ready to give to Rogers and re-sign a 3 year contract.
Aren't rogers aware of how popular txting is these days??? especially with crap voice plans they have to expect people would want to txt more....
300 txt's is the maximum?!! i send 3000 a month
please do not lock this or move to the sticky as it is getting lost in the shuffle:
Obviously people are outraged by the price plans. I want to know if I make up a generic email stating how angry we are that people will download or copy it and send to Rogers. We will all have to show the same email to the exact same address. Who would be with me? Who will we send it to?
