Yes, the Marion store confirmed it was flipped on at 4AM this morning. I was speedtesting on and off all day and got consistently above 3Mbps down and 2Mbps up. All in all pretty good, now they just need it in my home town, but AT&T has also said they're working on that.
Does anyone know if Bond County is slated for 3G anytime soon? I've seen blips of the 3G icon over the past few months, and we've had at least 2 days of spotty/no coverage with intermittent 3G icons in that same time period. Edge speeds seem to be dropping, too. Is there anywhere I can look for authoritative info from AT&T?
Well... I believe expansion is done until 2011 here. I hope AT&T gets their foot down with expansion here, even in our poor little 1900 market. Problem is, if the FCC approved the Alltel buyout for Southern Illinois, we'd probably have 3G and coverage through Southern Ilinois. Damn you ATNI and Smalltel. I pray you die in 2011 and spit your carcass and 3G/4G spectrum to AT&T, you lucky little clowns.
Bump, Chester is getting some 3G from one of the towers around us across the river in Perry County, MO. The other tower in town is not yet activated, however.
On the expansion map of estimated 3G footprint by March 31, 2011, it looked like Charleston, Danville, Harrisburg and Anna-Jonesboro are both on the docket of expansion. Nothing shown out of the Chicago area though. I think the regional VP's here are playing low key with expansion plans.
Carbondale-Marion, Illinois is on the list for 4G LTE this year. Kinda surprised, but happy! I have some friends who will be happy, very happy.
v Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).
Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in Birmingham, AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).^ Speed Test with DSL internet with AT&T(Bellsouth). Horrible.
I'm glad that SIU was on the list for 4G from Verizon. Verizon has to get more capacity there, that's a big reason behind it. I'm not saying the CDMA network is bad there, it's just not fast when I speedtest it. AT&T has a hard time with the more rural surrounding areas because they don't own 850 in most of Southern Illinois. It is what it is. They have a lot to fix before they widen coverage here.
VZ could have a very wide coverage area when they deploy here, BTW. Across the river from where I live, there's a new Verizon cell site with what looks to be LTE antennas.
Amazingly, ATNI/Smalltel is a sponsor of SIU's Atheltics even though Verizon seems to own all the other contracts associated with the university are with Verizon.
Alltel has no LTE plan. Lte that soak in a bit. No that's not a misspelling.
At least AT&T has buildout requirements in their 700 license here. Apparently, Alltel has issues figuring out what next gen technology to use in the 700 MHz spectrum they lucked into here, and their customers have responded by leaving in droves. Since the FCC is now obsessed with HHI, I would submit Verizon's HHI here is way too strong. Looking back at my comments in this thread, I saw all of this coming, so did the people who objected in the court of the FCC. ATNI has been a total failure here.
They should, in my humble opinion, sell out in the six markets to AT&T, who has been hunting for spectrum.
