I'm considering getting an iphone but need tethering. The instructions seem long and tedious... I tether with a q9h right now and it takes about 30 seconds or less to set up and my phone charges at the same time as I use a usb cable.
Is there a possibility of some sort of middleware being developed for the iphone 3G to allow tethering???
Was there any middleware for iphone v1?

I made another guide, this time on how to tether in WINDOWS XP (many requested). Take a look:

I haven't thoroughly went through the contract AT&T sent me yet, but I did find some interesting tidbits:
"Data Service sessions may be conducted only for the following purposes:
(i) Internet browsing;
(ii) email; and
(iii) corporate intranet access"
"Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, using services:
(i) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, without limitation, web camera posts or broadcasts, continuous jpeg file transfers, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, PEER-TO-PEER (P2P) FILE SHARING, automatic functions or any other machine-to-machine applications;
(ii) as substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections;
(iii) for voice over ip;
(iv) in conjunction with WWAN or other applications or devices which aggregate usage from multiple source prior to transmission;
(v) using the services for any activity that adversely affects the ability of other people or systems to use the network or system resources ..."
"v" goes on and on and specifically states among other things that you can't tether or stream video.
I'm not a lawyer, but if you take the contract literally, not only are some of the applications that come with the iPhone 3G prohibited, you're on shaky ground if the iPhone is your only phone.It also brings the question to mind: if you're not using the iPhone 3G to connect to an intranet and only use it as AT&T wants you to, for email and browsing, is 3G really necessary?
This is a tethering thread, and I do have some questions about that. I currently pay Qwest for their cheapest broadband plan: ~$35/month for a quoted speed of 1.5Mb/down and 640Kb/up. I know 3G can theoretically do 3.6Mb/down, so in least in theory 3G might be a better deal. A couple of questions:
- If someone has successfully tethered and used the iPhone as a proxy-server in a WiFi network, what upstream and downstream speeds did you see?
- Has anyone actually been docked by AT&T for excessive network usage? I'd be interested in hearing the details.
I didn't get any responses, but at least I know the answer to 2: no one has ever been cut off for P2P by AT&T. I found this at the IP Democracy site:
The bad news is the threat in the title. The good news is that if the FCC successfully punishes Comcast for throttling, tethering your iPhone and using the link anyway you see fit as long as it's for legal purposes should be O.K.
Hi folks - Glad to join in on this thread - this tethering topic is of high interest to me. (Some of you might remember me from the WM forums like MotoQ, 6700 talking about this stuff). Yes, that's right - I am not only a windows mobile convert, but a Verizon convert as well! *gasp*
So far I am loving having a little unix computer in my hand, and Cydia is indeed awesome. (Keep up the good work!)
Unfortunately (humorously?) my problem is with *windows* not the iphone. I can't get my darn intel pro wireless card to generate an ad-hoc network! I've set it up in the windows wireless settings (taking control away from the Intel app) and it just says waiting for network. Any help? Thanks in advance!
Edit: Ah, Mr. "NuclearElephant" I see you jumped ship with me.
Edit 2: SOLUTION: The problem was with my Intel 3945abg chipset. My work laptop uses this chipset and was set to be unable to use ad-hoc networks by my IT department. Easy workaround for 3945abg and all similar Intel Proset wireless NICs:
1. Completely uninstall all Intel wireless drivers
2. Reboot
3. Install the latest (v12) drivers from Intel's webpage here
4. Reboot
5. Use the profiles manager to create an ad-hoc network. It even works with WEP, WPA, etc! =]

Hey sorry to spam this thread, but I guess no one else is up this late right now.
Anyway I got it to work, and work very well! Now, gentlemen - we only need to find out a way to do a "true tether" so that no proxy is needed. (Think tunneling into a work VPN, or using other apps without SOCKS support) I know my g/f's BJ2 will do this in WM6 by handing off a 192.168.100.2 IP address and doing NAT to the 3G IP address of the phone.
Enough acronyms for ya?![]()

What about Netshare ?
No, your unlimited plan on your iPhone is unlimited. You can set it to say...Pandora.com and stream music to your phone 24/7 365 days a year as long as it is being done on AT&T's network. They can adjust/cancel your plan if you violate their roaming percentages. This applies to your voice plan as well.Originally Posted by fletch33

Its working flawlessly on my laptop.
great post!
Have A Care!!!!
Actually, it has nothing to do with percentages as no data cap is mentioned in the AT&T iPhone contract. If AT&T did terminate your service for violation of the contract terms, and keep in mind that they have never done this to anyone for "abusing" their data service, only threatened to do so in a statement to the FCC, it could be for streaming data or accessing data in a continuous manner. Both activities are forbidden in the contract. With the basic, non-business data plan, you can read e-mail and browse the Internet, that's about it...Originally Posted by LostMyMind
Great vid and great steps. I am new to the iphone world so excuse my possibly easy question. Once all those steps are taken will I need to do it all over when I disconnect and reconnect? Also will it interfere with regular drowsing? Thanks!!Originally Posted by jslugger94
