Question How to tell if a SIM card has been activated/registered?

I got a SIM card from a friend (for free) but he said he wasn't sure if the card has been activated/registered or not. How do I tell? If the phone shows, "No Service" = not activated/registered? Thanks.

What are the odds of it NOT being used if it was ever removed from the plastic card?

If the SIM was acquired from Rogers through HUP, the SIM will be locked to the account.

That, answered my question. The SIM was taken out from his HUP phone.

^Yes. If ordered through CS, the sim is registered to the account already, just not activated.

Really? I find that hard to believe. I have had plenty of SIMs left over from my previous HUPs and given them to friends to use. None of them ever reported any activation problems.

    ^ few options.

    a) they never bothered to tell you, and as of now think you're a complete tool and will never ask for another sim again .
    b) your hups could've been from a store (where the sim is not registered).
    c) your hups were from ages ago. Rogers didn't used to register sims from CS or CR orders. It's only been -what?- 2 years now that they started doing that.

FYI., when 'asking the rep to check if it is free', make sure they know what they're doing. It has happened that a stupid agent inadvertently REGISTERED a sim card that I was asking to check so I could give it to a friend. LOL. IE they basically screwed me over. I did ensure I was reimbursed the cost of a new sim card that time though .

to OP...what does 'being removed from wrap' have to do with anything? You can still see the numbers on the sim and register it advertently or otherwise without breaking the seal. The odds therefore are quite strongly leaning towards being registered (IE useless).

The SIM can be used on the same account where HUP was done.

If HUP is done at the store, they usually remove the SIM from the package.

Hmmm...I wonder is Rogers will unregister the SIM?
