Going from a basic phone to a smartphone with data plan usually means you end up paying Telus more every month so they are more willing to waive any early upgrade costs if it means increased revenue for them.
So yes, call loyalty. But always remember that the hardware and renewal cost is but a fraction of your long term plan costs so try to get the best possible plan at the lowest price first before you even bother to work on lowering the cost of a renewal fee. Paying extra fees on top of the plan for things like voicemail, call display, text messaging, long distance, and frequent overusage are things where Loyalty can help you out with free versions of these things. The cost of those things over a 3 year term can be far more than the small amount you pay for the early renewal. If you can get the extra cost items for free plus the early renewal fee waived then even better but if it is one thing or the other then go for the long term savings over the short term up front costs.
