Damn. I had visions of Steve Jobs announcing that, like when they spent 10 years developing Mac OSX for Intel in secret, the iPhone had been designed for AWS as well. Like unlocking the 850 MHz band on the HTC Touch Diamond with a firmware update, a similar update for the iPhone would unlock AWS. That's a very Steve Jobs-like thing to do too.
This is infact big news if it is true! This proves that Apple MIGHT be bringing Iphone 3g to T-mobile after the 3g launch. Very smart move for Apple indeed. They will only have to create new wireless drivers for the iphone in order to have it work with T-mobile in the future.
Good job!
i doubt it, unless there's some sort of loophole in the att contract, from my understanding they've got exclusive rights through 2010.
i don't know if band iv is included or not, but i don't see any reason for apple to make drivers for it so tmobile users could use it. apple is getting a piece of the monthly fees from att, if tmobile isn't selling the iphone, apple doesn't really make money off it....
Dude. It doesn't matter if it has chipset issues or not. I'm telling you that the frickin iPhone 3G probably has an Infineon Smarti 3GE chipset. Do you realize the enormity of this news? That means that the iPhone 3G almost likely supports frickin 1-1.5 Mbps(real time) AWS TMO 3G native. My heart is literally racing. This wouldn't just be big news, this is probably the biggest event in this message board's history if true. This would mean that regardless of any other 3G handset that was released for TMO, we would have the pre-eminant 3G handset (flaws and all) available to us!
My only suspicion that could possibly enable AWS on the iPhone, whether now or down the road, is due to their contracts with T-Mobile DE, AT, & PL-- they could request AWS support because I'm almost certain they would prefer their customers roaming on T-Mobile US while here on 3G instead of AT&T, necessitating AWS support.
I highly, highly, highly doubt that this would ever happen, but it's about the only possible explanation given AT&T's US exclusive till 2010 or whatever.

correct if I am wrong
phone is a lot like CB radio, frequency is controlled by synthesizer, which is pre-programmed into a chip, and I don't see any easy solution or hacking to change band
if not, I should have been using N95-1 with modified 3G
Whether ATT uses the AWS spectrum they bought for current techonology or uses it exclusively for 4G LTE remains to be seen. Since they purchased strategically located licenses, I would imagine that the spectrum will be used to buttress both current and future rollouts.
So by having AWS assets, it is not unreasonable to think that future iphones and other phones in ATT lineup will offer AWS.
