RocketMac posted some settings on the TM506 thread http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...ight=tm506+mac page 1. It's for OSX, don't know if it works on 10.5...

Is the new firmware that doesn't allow you to tether out and has Tmobile put this on the new phones yet? What is the version of the software I should avoid? Also, with the gmail app, can it be run in the background and notify of new mail? Thanks.

You can hit the end call key and minimize the application but it just sits there as far as i know. You would have to go back to the application and hit refresh. You might as well just exit the program and run it again when you want to check for more mail. It only takes a few seconds to check for mail when you run it again. I think the t-mobile email application allows for background notification.

Computer (Lenovo ThinkPad T61 running Windows XP SP3) tethering over Bluetooth PAN works great through my TM506 with current R3DA firmware and no hacking or debranding on T-Mobile USA.
    Hope that helps,

Sorry to dig up an old post. Recently I have noticed that, my tethering/browsing never shows 3G (H symbol) anymore. Even in the areas I KNOW has t-mobile 3g coverage.

That said, makes me want to keep this phone.... reasonable internet coverage (T-Mo's 3G coverage is sporadic in colorado anyway), no "nagging" asking me to get one of those really expensive internet plans.

If anyone still has 3G coverage for tethering please let me know.

H symbol? You mean E (EDGE) or G (GPRS) symbol?
Regardless, your connection type should have nothing to do with tethering.
Are you getting 3G connections when not tethering?
Is 3G turned off in your phone? (Check the setting.)
Have you tried your phone in a T-Mobile store?
I'm now tethering with an Android myTouch 3G at 3G speeds in San Francisco.

TM506 used to give me three types of symbels G, E and H (H = 3G). I don't remember changing any settings on my phone to restrict 3G. I did not pose my question clearly... I failed to mention that I am tethering using TM506 on the 5.99 t-zones plan. I was wondering if t-mobile is restricting these grandfathered plans to edge.

I have no idea -- I'm using Unlimited Data -- perhaps someone else can help.
You might want to also post your question in the T-Mobile Forums.

Maybe something in the firmware got reset and the symbols aren't showing anymore.

If you want to force your phone onto the 3G network only, you can use a utility called MyPhoneExplorer. Once that software is loaded, if you go into Other and then Profiles, you should see a selection for UMTS Only. Select that and test your tethering. If your connection is going, you're on the 3G network. You can always use MyPhoneExplorer to switch back to GSM/UMTS and then it will use whatever network is available.

You can also do a Speedtest.net test while tethering. If you get a decent speed, you'll know you're on the 3G network.
