Ok I am new to tethering and all of this. Let me give you the break down.
    I have a Macbook 1.83 running OSX 10.4.11
I have the unlimited web and all that.
When I found out I can tether to my mac via bluetooth I played with the settings a bit and got it to work. I changed hard drives a month ago or so and can't figure out how to get it working again.
What is weird is I got the status to show up in the bluetooth menu on my mac and not the modem menu. In fact I could only connect through the BT menu. The Modem menu would disconnect within 5 seconds.
    Any help is appreciated.

I don't run ubuntu, but modem setup is plain vanilla. Posting now from old laptop running SuSe 10.0.
the modem device is ttyACM0 (or ttyACM1, depending on your configuration). You may need to modprobe cdc-acm to get these devices. I'm using *99***4# as the phone #. Insure that the apn is defined in the 'internet settings' on the phone, e.g., internet2.voicestream.com. Set baud rate of 115200. Here's modem init strings:

    ATZ
    AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

User name and pasword are blank. Use open DNS. I use kinternet, which provides a convenient widget on the desktop for dialup/hangup. - hth

    Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.14320/432; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

I know this is dumb because it is discussed in the previous post but is there a simple guide to tethering for newbies/dummies? I don't even know where to begin. I have vista and a debranded tm506 and want to tether via usb cable.

I had good success tethering using this Wiki with my old Samsung T619 a long time ago: http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/GSM_Tethering.

I wouldn't mind seeing an updated procedure written specifically for the TM506 though.

It seems pretty simple and straightforward with all of the links. I don't know what kind of codes you're talking about that are confusing you.

Certainly if you have any questions about any of the steps you can post it here and we'll try to answer it. But even the person you quoted in your post said they found it extremely easy.
    Tried it a 8th time,

    Phone turns on again

All the while holding down "number 2" button

    Phone displays:

Do not remove the USB cable until you have exited the application on your PC.

I've tried it at least 12 times now same exact result,

    -Phone turns on

-All the while holding down "number 2" button (400 seconds last try)

    -Phone displays:

"Do not remove the USB cable until you have exited the application on your PC."

Held the "number 2" key for 400 sec before I ended last attempt.

How long do you hold "number 2" key before anything happens?

you must be doing something wrong. The phone never turns on during the process unless you hit the power button. The whole process is very easy and takes about ten minutes.

    1. Shut down the phone.

    2. Run A2Uploader and click the FileSystem Tool button

    3. Hold down 2 on the phone and plug in the USB cable

This is exactly what I do.

-I literally hold down the number 2 key on the phone

-THEN plug in the USB cable

-about 30 secs later screen shows Sony Ericsson logo as if it's booting up

-then states : "Do not remove the USB cable until you have exited the application on your PC."

That's all that happens, I held that number 2 key for 6 minutes + waiting for anything to happen.

I don't think your phone was turned off properly then. Turn it off. Take out the battery. Put the battery back in. Do NOT turn power on. Now try it. Either that or your phone is somehow defective. I have debranded 5 different tm506's and never had your problem and I used the wiki without any problems.

Thanks to you and the person who made that post. It worked flawlessly. Very simple. I am 6 blocks from a 3g connection so I am on edge right now (literally ) and the speeds were brutally slow. Luckily I have wifi at home, just wanna use it in a pinch in my car. I am still on the $5.99 data so I don't want to go crazy anyway.

I used to tether on Sprint EVDO all the time via PDAnet. It would be really fast at first, almost like Cable internet, but then it would slow down considerably after a few minutes. Does HSDPA do that too?

I don't see how your phone turned on if you never hit the power button.

    That makes two of us.

Following exact instructions to a "T" it does the same thing every time.
