I've got Rogers Talkspot and am taking a trip down to the states fairly soon. I can't see why it wouldn't work but the FAQ on Talkspot says that it only works in Canada. I was pretty sure it was more or less VOIP so it should work. Anybdoy triedusing it outside of Canada?
This talkspot/uno crap is absolute BS cashgrab. I wish the blackberry platform was more open. On my Nokia E61i I used Truphone, it was free and worked anywhere, non of this BS paying rogers more money to use the internet you ALREADY pay for to make a call.
I won't argue that its just Rogers trying to make more money... but it's still a very neat idea. I like the sound of the phone automatically transitioning to talkspot mode too. From the sounds of it if I have the wifi network setup in my phone then it works automagically. My only concern is quality. I used to use voip on an old windows mobile phone and the quality was crap.
Has anyone else tried TalkSpot? I've been waiting for the BlackBerry Curve 8320, which is wifi-capable (no GPS), and TalkSpot-enabled. I'm wondering if I'd be better off with the Bold if I can cut a deal with Rogers.

I'm using it on my 8120 - call quality is excellent (though I did take the rogers router which is supposed to be "voice optimized" - can't tell you what its like on other routers). As for "seamless" transition - overall, its not bad, but I would say about 25% of the time if I'm on a call and leave my house, the call drops when switching from UMA to GSM. As far as i can tell, its never happened the other way around.
Overall, very happy with it - I was able to drop my LD plan with Rogers Home Phone so overall, I'm still paying the same thing as i was before.
Wait... Are you guys saying that a Rogers UMA phone will not let you use a UMA wifi conection outside of Canada?? Why would that be??
With T-Mobile USA, you can use a UMA phone anywhere in the world and when connected via UMA it acts like a regular domestic call.. So you could go to China, and make a call to your home back in New York, connected UMA and it would only bill you with your normal mins.. Some ppl have even used a T-Mo prepaid SIM and tried it and it worked.. hahaha.
I cna't believe that Rogers would not let you do that as well.. holy cow, I hope they send you coupons for Vaseline with your monthly statements... cuz man, you'd sure need it.. lol.

Canadian carriers earn huge amounts of money when their customers use their devices outside of Canada. What motivation would they have to cannibalize from that revenue stream?
Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but has anybody had any experience with this since then?
I'm in the US right now, and somehow I'm able to connect via UMA. I'm wondering if Rogers can tell via the IP I'm connected with that I'm Canada and charge me for roaming, or if everything will be charged as if I was in my local calling area.

When they designed UMA, that was not part of the plan, they should not care. So far, they only DIS-ALLOW some connections from non-Canadian IP's but its not worth their time to investigate every single IP and charge for it, plus there is no way to accurately tell where some IP's originate from..

Talkspot should be a part of every customer's plan in my opinion. It takes strain off the network, while at the same time uses plan minutes (if they don't have a plan), its a win-win for Rogers.
My New Rogers Plan
- $35 Unlimited Local Calling Plan
- $30 6GB Data -$10 discount
- $10 Retention Value Pack - Free (2500 texts, CID, VM)
- 100 mins LD - Free
- $67 + tax
The oligopoly was not built in a day - it will take time to bring to heel.

"I have to say, I've got a suspicion that I am one of the very few Canadians who regularly peruses Rogers' terms and conditions on-line on a regular basis. Suing Rogers provided me with a rational excuse for this use of my time."
