3G is Live in the SF Bay Area!!!!

3G is live in the SF Bay area as of right now....

I walked away from my phone for 20 min and when i got back I had 3G service on my 6263.

I am about to pop the sim in my TM506 to grab some speed tests.

Sadly since I am cheating by using the wap.voicestream.com apn from my blackberry sim, i keep having issues completing speed tests The failure occurs on the upload side, but I am getting average 900kbs with about 175-200 upload from my TM506 tethered to my MacBook Pro using bluetooth.

I am going to switch the data plan on my other SIM to total internet and test again later to provide actual verifiable speed tests.

I'm in Sacramento now, so I'm sure I'll be happy when they turn it on here and get the white G1s to the stores.

Oh, cool, I didn't know you had moved, where in Sac did ya move to?

Edit-I've lived in Sac, on Marconi Ave between Watt and Fulton, and down on Howe Ave near Fair Oaks Blvd. I like the area a lot! Anyway, I hope it all goes well for you over there

I actually live in Walnut Creek, but since it's active here I would go so far as to say that it's active in the entire bay area per compass.

Yeah, I agree, thanks for keeping us updated Jeff! Do you know when they'll turn it on in the North Bay?

I suspect you are right about that.

They have very recently cleaned up a lot of LAC numbering, which seemed to be in constant flux during the 3G buildout. For example, your 2G LAC 218 was recently split into 213+218+227 and boundaries were tweaked a little.

Do you happen to have a phone which will tell you what your 3G LAC is?

Here is a speed test using internet2.voicestream.com now that I have added the total internet package on my "data" sim...

The upload is a little slow but.... And speedtest.net had me as my closest server being Phoenix AZ

Hi Jeffro: I see the server used for the Speedtest is in Arizona. Is that the preferred test server when you check your speedtest on Speedtest.net ?

If you force the test to a local server, does your results vary a bit?

Yeah, Phoenix is the preferred test server. When i move it back to San Francisoco where I am closest to the downlink speeds are a little slower but the uplink is a little faster so....

i have only tested a few times, i shall do more later.

One a side note, after doing some driving today there are several sites that don't appear to have 3G yet. I don't know if this is because they are still turning it on or???

I really hope that these sites will come online with 3G in the next few days.... That would be most unfortunate if they did not.

    Jeff
