I see endless threads for people asking how to edit themes or create their own so I'm voting to sticky this in the main forum as that's where most people end up coming to ask anyways.
In order to do this, you have to know how to SSH into your phone. Learning how to do this allows you to do pretty much whatever you want from changing SMS bubbles to badges, to backgrounds, to making your own icons.
For this, you need to download a few things from Cydia on your phone and then a few things to your computer. This guy has excellent tutorials:
(these are 2.x tutorials by the way)
How to SSH your phone:
This guy uses Fugu as an SSH client on his Mac, if you are a windows user, follow similar steps, just use something like WinSCP or any similar windows based SSH client. I don't believe fugu is available for windows, but I could be wrong.
How to create your own themes using Winterboard (he only does a basic tutorial, but once you get the hang of this, you pretty much will know how to edit anything you want.)
As far as anything else goes, if you get stuck or have questions, how about we ask all questions in this thread?
Also, if you want to know a few places to get icon packs or wallpaper packs, or want to share cool ones, put that here too.
I personally find a wealth of wallpapers and icon packs on deviantart.com
I also found quite a few different sets of SMS bubbles from modmyi.com (you can also achieve the same goal from googling "different color iPhone SMS bubbles" and it brings up several places to download cool SMS bubbles from). I know Cydia has a limited selection right now.
You can also MAKE your own icons. Me and my brother use Photoshop for this, but any similar program will do. I believe the typical dimensions for iPhone icons are 59 x 60. Most people use around that range when creating them.
Appreciate the link to my site. I have some 20 sections in that tutorial. If someone has an idea for something that I'm not covering, I'll expand my tutorial on this.
FYI for anyone trying to use this tutorial, I believe the site author may have moved things around a little bit as the original links I posted a few mos ago don't work, but his site is NOT down.
You can go to hackthatphone.com and navigate to specific tutorials, he also has 3.x tutorials now as well. If a mod sees this, would you mind editing my original post in order to reflect just the hackthatphone.com link instead of the specific page URLs so it doesn't show up as a broken link?

Thanks!
I was just getting ready to let XFF know the links were invalid and see about getting them updated. Then I saw your post. Thanks for the update.
Yes those tutorials on Hack That Phone are extremely helpful. I have a couple of questions, though.
I'm currently using the iBox Final theme. The other night I used the iBox Final lock screen overlay found in the iBox Final thread on modmyi.com and placed one of my photos in the overlay. Then I SSH'd into the phone and re-named the lockscreen.png image to lockscreen2.png or something like that, then copied over my new image and changed its name to lockscreen.png. Seemed to work perfectly. Is that the best and/or only way to do such a thing? The theme creator has several other lock screen PNG images available, but I don't see how to get them into the choices for wallpapers under Settings. It would be great if I could switch between the different lock screen wallpapers without having to SSH into the phone.
Another thing: I'd like to combine the iBox Final lock screen with the iBox Carbon theme for the rest of the phone's UI. The iBox Carbon theme has a single tap to unlock lock screen, while the Final theme has a slider. I prefer the slider, which is why I'd like to get that lock screen in with the Carbon theme. What is the best way to go about doing that? Replace some PNG files in the Carbon theme with the ones from the Final theme lock screen?
I got a question and don't want to start a new topic ....
Is there and difference in the iphone 3gs and iphone 4 when it comes to converting videos to watch on them..?
I use handbrake on my macbook pro, but since the resolution is difffernt on the iphone 4 i was just curious, i'm gonna start converting movies for it and just wanna know if im doing it right
