You can even personalize your skins and you can also swap skins on the fly. I ran Manilla2D at first but when I found these skins, I am not going back...

    THANKS SO MUCH!

I was actually about to uninstall Mobile Shell and try Manila2D and then I tried this. I'm staying with Mobile Shell now. This is the hotness!

You answered your own question...if I want to delete it. I don't want to use the mouse to select the email, I want to scroll as if it was a dpad and left softkey to delete.

Unfortunately, if I am reading your question correctly, I think it's a "feature" that MS added (or changed) in WM 6.1 to mobile Outlook. Because I remember in older versions (even as recent as 6.0) you could select even multiple emails without opening them and perform actions on them. I particularly miss being able to select multiples and 'mark for download' (since I only dl headers). But now I have to open each and every one of them -- I believe delete is the same behavior if I am not mistaken...

If you question was different, sorry 'bout that.

I like the cursor because it's great for one-handed use, but it sucks for scrolling through an email, inbox or web pages (ok web pages with Opera are not so bad because you can flick scroll). The mouse is annoying in the Inbox because you literally can't select a specific email by clicking on it, without opening it. Perhaps there is something that would require double clicking instead of single clicking (like the way it works in desktop Windows - one click=select, double click=open). Anyone???

This program DOES JUST THAT. It makes the VOLUME keys emulate DPAD UP and DOWN. So you can quickly scroll through messages and Contacts.

I noticed the Mouse behavior in certain windows apps making it difficult to select an item without launching it. While it isn't something widely requested, I do think I remember there being a registry hack to enable "double tap to open".

    3G Video Call

    Hi guys,

All 3G equipped windows mobile phones have a video call button on the dialer. I know that the Epix doesn't have a secondary video camera, but nevertheless I'd like to to able to use the 3G video call feature when I'm travelling abroad. Does anyone know if there are additional software I need to install or registry tweaks or something like that?

    Thanks in advance.

It's doing page up/down in both Pocket Outlook and Pocket Internet Explorer, not up/down.

I started with TouchFlo/Manila2D and then tried Mobile Shell, with the SPB Skins package that was so nicely linked to. I'm going back to TouchFlo; the Mobile Shell framework is more customizable (yay) but much, much clunkier. Performing common tasks and navigating the interface requires many times more clicks to get where you're going, and a great deal of the UI is limited to graphical-only navigation. There might be a way to supplant these icons with text labels, but doing this so far has confounded my every effort. The provided iconography simply isn't up to par, it's not thought through well enough to make a difference; it's just eye candy based loosely on extant popular application and system theming. On a handheld device, icons need to be universally and unmistakably understood instantly; the purpose their symbolism serves is legibility and clarity of function, especailly within GUIs operated in such a manner and environment that smartphones are. I'd say with Mobile Shell only a fraction of the iconset passes muster in this way, and the rest is fluff at best.

Mobile Shell eats a lot more battery life not only with animated page transitions and high-memory layout options enabled (really, who disables eye candy? :>) but also due to the increased activity required to navigate. On the Epix, at least, the textual readouts for battery life are misleading and there's a dearth of shortcuts to figuring out what day and date it is without having to tab back to Today.

That all said, I'm a sucker for customizability of GUIs and I'm thankful both programs exist. Bottom line is Mobile Shell, in my analysis, is the inferior program, and it costs thirty bucks to boot. M2D is free. I don't feel like paying anyone for the privilege of hosing up my UI, at least until Stardock starts making WM skinning apps.

Thanks for the thorough analysis on the differences between the two.

I've been playing a lot with Mobile Shell, and like it a lot, but is not perfect. Been meaning to try Manila2D, but I saw there seemed to be a lot more manual customization needed.

Question for those that are up-to-speed with the latest on M2D on the Epix. Is it easy to get back off if you don't like it -- or does it require a hard reset? I saw a latest pack customized for the Epix that had liek 4-5 CABs for easy install, but wasn't sure if reverting back was as simple as uninstalling the programs!

    Thanks!

What I've been doing is using SPBBackup software and backing up my entire device onto a microsd and THEN screwed around with M2D. I couldn't get the row of buttons on the bottom not to be cut in half, so I decided to restore back to the previous image. Now I've decided NOT to use it at all since they found a way to do RealVGA. Oh it looks so sweet..it's like running a system with 1680x1050 res after running 1440x900 for so long. So much nicer looking. Everything fits better too. And I can finally play Warfare Inc with no problems. Ok I'm starting to go off topic so I better stop here.

So are you installing RealVGA (I assume at 96dpi) and then using M2D? I would be curious as to how the step-by-step install order would work on that since I may try it.

And thanks for the advice on using SPBBackup -- I think I'll try that.

Actually it's the other way around. The install procedure for M2D on the Epix requires three or four steps, which is more complicated, but the customization options are fewer. Once it's on, it's pretty well on. With Mobile Shell, you have all the various skins to combine and try out, through a fairly laborious (no preview) process of manual customization.

It's pretty easy to get back off; I used the Remove Programs dialog and simply uninstalled them in reverse order, ignoring the soft reset prompts until I was done and soft-resetting myself. I checked and didn't find any traces left in the registry, either.

No, I'm not using M2D at all, because I heard it won't work with the 96dpi...I gave up on it all together..waiting for something else to be released.

Google Maps with Street View for the Epix

Google has not released a version that incorporates the "Street View" feature for Windows Mobile yet, but if that is what you want then read on. First let me say that this java midlet is a little buggy and the GPS will not function within it--I only use the street view with this one and the official Google Maps application for everything else.

Step 1: You have to install a different midlet manager such as IBM J9 from here:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/55395527/Package.zip.html

*just follow the instructions inside the zip file to get that setup as the default midlet manager--the Java app that comes on the phone will show the small street view box, but will not allow you to go full screen and bug you about data usage every 2 seconds...

Step 2: Grab the hacked Google Maps 2.3.1 courtesy of KD Kobes here:
    http://www.4shared.com/file/63749821...ml?err=no-sess

*Click on it and install it and then run it--the text looks pretty bad when it launches but it still functions correctly. Perform a search for an address that has street view, click on the map and select "Street View" and then it will pull up the small box, hit the softkey "Expand" and it will go full screen. You can swipe left or right and pan around 360 degrees. On my Blackjack I was able to click on the arrow and it would advance down the street--on this Epix I had to use that ChangeMouse hack to toggle the optical mouse to Dpad mode and advance down the street that way.

    Automatic Profiles

I have been using Windows Mobile phones for over 2 years and the Epix is the first one I have seen that did not have Automatic Profiles built-in. Even the BJ1 had that. I find this feature extremely useful as I attend lots of meetings and like not having to worry about remembering to turn my phone to vibrate during them, it just happens based on the calendar.

I tried the TF2D and it does have this feature but I found a lot of bugs with the Epix and it also doesn't seem to handle the multiple volume and ring options correctly. I have since loaded the trial of SPB Mobile Shell with some custom themes from this forum and that is, ok. But the only program I can find that can add the automatic profiles is SPB Pocket Tools and that doesn't work for 320x320 phones. What do other people use for this feature?
