This may answer your question about the body:

"...Alas the chrome is paint over plastic.."

Based on some of the other parts of the review (no area to hang stylus, but looks like you'll need it from time to time) and the lack of a hardware keyboard, I may have to pass on this one too!

I made a decision to stick it out with the Epix.
It was the dangly stylus that convinced me too.

The Epix runs at 240x240 (without RealVGA), so the bottom is chopped off. This means all old PPC apps will look great without hacks, AND you get more reading of emails/webpages/today screen.

Still ... I think I'll pass on this guy
Actually with or without RealVGA you still have a 320x320 screen. I have wallpaper at that rez and at 128dpi or 96dpi it still shows up ok without any scaling or clipping. RealVGA just sets how the Epix uses the 320x320 display. Lower dpi means smaller icons and more compatibility with earlier apps that were designed for WM5 and WM6 that defaulted to 96dpi. 128 makes is more finger friendly for the icons but breaks many apps that expect something else.

Either way, I still agree with you, I like the keyboard and mouse. I was hoping for the Omnia but AT&T tanked that idea and since then the Epix won me over the whole iPhone killer thing.

I really like RealVGA... anybody else using it out there? The only thing that's not right is the current call screen. I'd like to crack open the DLL and edit the right resources to get it to show up correctly.

Been using it since I found the working version on xda-devs. There are some annoying points in it's use, namely the tiny icons of running apps like the GPSProxy and Tom Tom after I get a call are REAL tiny at 96dpi, but the rest of it works like it's supposed to.

Does your current call window fill up the whole screen? Mine displays OK but it isn't taking up the whole screen and i'd like to make it bigger...

Wow, I can't believe I read through all 37 pages of this thread.

Too bad I don't want to turn my Epix into an iPhone or HTC cookie-cutter phone, let alone hurt my eyes even more with the increased squinting courtesy of RealVGA. (though I don't blame those who are trying, especially with that last one mod.)

    Now for what really matters.

    1. Has anyone figured out a fix for the Notes not syncing?
    2. Is there a fix for the increasing ringtones, even when the Ring Style is not set to Increasing?
    3. Any luck unlocking the Network selection options that AT&T hides? I was able to unlock manual network selection on the Moto Q Global as well as displaying real alpha tags, but no luck with the Epix so far. TIA.

    1. & 2. I have no clue
    3. AT&T hides it but if you unlock your phone by calling 611, when u plug in a different sim card u should see the network selection options. Call 611 and tell them you have a business trip in Asia and you have to leave in the next few days. They'll give u the code in less than a few mins and tell you how to unlock it. Hope that helps.

For #2, a few people have made it through the ranks of samsung support and the word on the street is a fix will be released "soon". I know it's SUPER annoying... I can't wait for this to be fixed.

Somebody mentioned increasing the rings before it kicks off to voice mail to help with missing calls because of this. Interestingly enough, it's just a weird bug somewhere... because alarms and (sometimes) notifications will blare at full volume when the phone is in standby.

The fix should also include emails not waking up the phone. I'm sure when it's released.. there will be a flurry of activity of the forums. Let's hope Samsung can stick to their word and support this awesome phone... hopefully they recognize that a lot of people are really liking it.

Do you guys think we will eventually get the WM6.5 upgrade? I hope support lasts that long...

    Media Player Skins on Epix?

I've been trying to install some bigger buttoned skins for media player, but none seem to work.

They all say that you just copy 'em into \program files\windows media player but it doesn't work for me.

    Anyone had success?

Here is my favorite so far. Bilingual users who type frequently in Spanish, German, Czech and similar languages might appreciate this one. But even if you are not bilingual, you might want to give it a try.

Get rid of the annoying screen with endless symbols that appears when you press FN+Spacebar with this registry mod.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/IME/SymbolSelector
Change the setting for Keycode to 116. (The default is 122.)

Now, to get accented characters, you just type the regular character and then press FN+Spacebar (hold down the Fn key while you press Spacebar.) Keep holding FN and press Spacebar a few times and you will cycle through the various extended characters associated wit the character you just typed. Release FN when you get the one you are looking for. All this right in the middle of your text entry field. No more taking your focus off your document to wade through endless screens of symbols!

    For example:

To get ŕ type the letter a then press FN+Spacebar once.
To get é type the letter e then press FN+Spacebar twice.
To get ń type the letter n then press FN+Spacebar once.
To get ü type the letter e then press FN+Spacebar four times.
To get ß type the letter s then press FN+Spacebar four times.

And this is not only for accented characters!

Type the letter R followed by FN+Spacebar to get the registered trademark symbol.
Type the letter C and press FN+Spacebar four times and you get the copyright symbol.
Type the dollar sign and press FN+Spacebar a few times and you'll find other currency signs like euro, yen and pounds.
Type the ? mark and press FN+Spacebar to get the inverted question mark used to open questions in Spanish.

Experiment with this on a blank note or Word document and you might just love it. If not, you can go back to the Registry and change that Keycode setting back to 122 for the default symbol selection screen.

    Input:
"Requires a stylus more often than HTC's TouchFLO 3D phones, yet there's no stylus silo so you've got to hang it from the included tiny lanyard." WOOOOW. this is reason enough not to get it. With the Epix... it's nice to have the stylus when doing configs in a lot of menus... but you could easily just go with the optical mouse. There's no mouse on the incite AND you have to have your stylus dangling around dorkily from your phone? noooo thanks.

Also... no hardware QWERTY. I know some people need this and some don't... I'm one that definitely needs one.

    The Good:

Good Call. I was watching youtube reviews on it and it doesn't look good. The phone is the same thickness as the Epix. The Epix and Incite are roughly the same size. The touchscreen is very iffy. The housing is cheap plastic.

The Incite has the same processor as the Fuze (528mhz Qualcomm). The Incite sports the same amount of Rom/Ram as the Epix. The Epix has the fastest processor at 624mhz.

So you're downgrading the processor speed for:
    a larger screen
    no QWERTY keyboard
    small battery

Watch the reviews on it. All the reviews I've seen say they don't like it. Something about the touchscreen being finicky or something.

Also you have to look at the developers. Samsung ALWAYS provides software updates and at least 1 OS upgrade. This is important. We've never had problems cooking roms either. The process on an LG is a mystery.

I also use the new Fuze... but even having an actual keyboard under the slider sucks once you get used to the Epix/Blackjack style. I find myself having to use the onscreen keyboard to make small changes and it is horrible. The Fuze doesn't have tactile feedback (aside from the phone app). The Incite DOES have tactile feedback at least. The default keyboard is nasty, but that can always be changed.

If your looking at the Incite, go with the Fuze. Higher resolution, better camera, QWERTY, more memory, already has cooked roms. I had AT&T pricematch Walmart/LetsFly.com's $250 upgrade price which allows me to also use the $50 MIR = $200

For #1, I haven't found a native way to do that, but there is a free app out that does work (i've tried on my i770 this week).

It looks fine for me, but I think you're right, both the touchpad dial keys and the in call status are shifted to the left a little instead of using the full display width.

I've switched out the contact manager for iContact which works really well, and there's an iDial app too that replaces the dialpad part that I haven't tried yet. As for Today screens, I've been wanting to play (read: reprogram) rlToday with both Mortscript, Mortplayer, and Sys2Reg running to feed widget-like data like storage space meters and signal strengths for the phone and wifi. Would love a meter that spits out cpu usage, anyone know what does it?

Check out rlToday and batterystatus (now called HomeScreenPlusPlus) for making powerful custom today screens. I've been working on a HSPP theme for a while but I just really haven't had time.

I don't know if they do specifically what you're looking for but that's a good place to start if you're wanting a "roll your own" completely new today screen.
