Anybody else completely fed up with S2U2 1.35? It was extremely frustrating this weekend - froze up and forced me to do a soft reset multiple times.. and just generally, very buggy. I hope switching back to 1.33 fixes all the problems I had. And my full post of settings sure did come in handy lol

    Exclamation My hacks and questions

After reading this thread a few times and researching other forum posts, I've started hacking my Epix to make it more usable.

    1. Re-mapping buttons and volume rocker up/down: I am using AEBPlus for button mapping, but the volume rocker up/down for scrolling doesn't always work. I am using VolFix (smartskey) for volume rocker re-mapping which has been reliably acting as a page up/page down.

    2. Finger Mouse Toggle: player911 mentions "chgFingerMouse for quick Dpad-to-Mouse swapping." I coudn't find such an app, but in #369 he later mentions MouseOnOff.exe - a hidden file in the \Windows directory. Using File Explorer I tried to remove the "Hidden" attribute so I could map the calendar button to it using AEBPlus. But AEBPlus won't see hidden files. I ended up copying MouseOnOff.exe to my computer, removing the "Hidden" attribute, and copying it back to a new folder I created in \Program Files then used AEBPlus to re-map the calendar button to the file located there. Any other ways I could have done that?

    3. Voice Recorder/Voice Notes: I thought WM or the Epix would have a way to record voice memos in one or two simple steps. Looks like my only options are the $25 Resco Audio Recorder or the Notes organizer app and using the recording toolbar to attach an audio file to a note. I see a "Record" link in the \Windows\AppButtons directory but the link appears to do nothing. I see no "Voice Notes" file anywhere on the phone as mentioned in post #460.

    4. No e-mail notifications after screen goes dark/standby: I have tried SEVEN (too basic) and am currently using Flexmail, and the problem exists with both of those e-mail apps as well. SMS and the data connection re-connecting always wake-up the phone from standby. I think I understand that some people that are using phoneAlarm or S2U2 with mixed success as a "fix" for the issue?? Also, would I use the QVGA version of S2U2 on the Epix?

    5. The useless LED light: I would expect the LED light would continue to blink at various intervals after receiving an SMS, missed call, e-mail, etc. until cleared. For me it only blinks for a few seconds. I read elsewhere that phoneAlarm makes the LED more useful. There's also an "LED notification fix while device on standby" utility by zenkinz in this forum thread http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=100305&st=70 which is on my list of apps to try.

    6. App-Unlocker: It doesn't seem to do anything for me either. I ran the .cab file, noticed nothing new in the programs/settings folders. ??

    7. Protective Case: I can't seem to find one. The Zagg InvisibleSHIELD http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/...ns-shields.php looks like it will help prevent scratches, but will it cushion the phone enough to survive a few-foot-fall to the hard pavement?

    8. Other tweaks and setting changes: Heard about TouchXperience Advanced Configuration Tool http://touchxperience.com/en/advance...tion-tool.html on the WMExperts podcast. Looks like a simple program to customize the phone without the need for registry mods. Anyone using it on the Epix?

Otherwise I'm quite satified with the Epix - a replacement to my Treo650, and the Fuze which I returned in less than a week. The Fuze took too many steps to be a productive phone and messaging device.

hello, all. i got through the first 10 or so pages of this thread. some excellent info for my epix purchase. thanks so much.

i wanted to share what i could. i have vito audionotes installed with auto call recording enabled. for some reason it just will NOT record more than one minute of a call. i figured it has something to do with the way the phone goes to sleep or whatever. anyway, after a few days of messing with it, i think i have a fix.

settings > system > power > LCD off: UNCHECK "Turn off LCD after call has been connected for"

that seems to fix it. i'll be testing it a couple of more days to make sure this is actually the culprit. i don't know why that setting would have anything to do with it, but it seems to work by process of elimination.

Not deal breakers, but I really hoped the "BJ3" would fix this. So out comes the Epix and I thought "finally they got it right."

So I go over to the store and try it out...multiple times and in multiple ways and discover the fatal flaw...the absolutely awful optical pointer. I cannot really express how much I hate this pointing device. The jog wheel/DPAD combo on the BJ2 was great to use and fast...really easy navigation that was fast and accurate. The optical pointer on the Epix is utter crap in comparison. I really tried to get used to it but I found it terribly imprecise, slow, and you couldn't even move across the screen smoothly with one movement and to do anything requiring precision necessitated the need for the stylus...one of the reasons I switched to a smartphone a while ago was that I wanted one-handed and not two-handed navigation which in much more practical when using a phone.

I tried the Fuze a bit but it was a real brick and I felt the screen was unresponsive and I once again found an over-reliance on the stylus so I figured I'd keep my BJ2 and see what happened. What happened was the Incite. You can check out my posts on the Incite threads and while I wish the screen resolution was a bit higher (though the resolution on the Fuze is a bit of a joke because the high res coupled with the small screen means unreadable web pages anyway), they made one really smart choice...touchscreen coupled to a clickable jog wheel. The mobiletech review on the phone never really even mentions it (which in my opinion makes it a seriously flawed review) but this is the deal: if you can't quite do what you want with the touchscreen (e.g. scrolling through a dropdown list), you just scroll along with the jog dial and then click it. This combo mean excellent ONE-HANDED navigation which I consider critical to the use of a WinMo phone. Without the jog dial this phone would be much less attractive and yes, you would need the stylus. I've had the phone for 2 days now and used the stylus once...yes once, and that was just to see what it was like. Otherwise, I never even think about using it...there's just no need.

Also, since charging it yesterday, with moderate use I'm down to 54% battery (overnight with a locked screen the charge level didn't drop at all...not the case with my BJ2). I'm still in the "try out" period, but I'm definitely liking the phone. Yes, not having a stylus slot was really stupid, but you really don't need it so in the end, who cares?

Anyway, just my opinion, everyone's needs are different (and did I mention that I really, really hate that optical mouse on the Epix...ugh).
Well first off a few things. The optical sensor can easily be adjusted in the "Optical Mouse" app in Settings. Change the sensitivity to 3 for a much better result.

I agree the jog wheel/dpad solution of prior blackjack phones was awesome (to navigate around Windows Mobile Smartphone). But now your dealing with a touchscreen edition and not all apps allow for simple scrolling/clicking actions. You'll find that the touchscreen is a very important factor in working applications.

The Optical mouse may seem... "off" but I assure you that it is only a temporary feeling. It really does come in handy and soon enough you'd be using more frequently. To fix the "scroll" problem, simply remap your Volume keys to Up/Down.

The Fuze is weird. It is thicker then the Epix or Incite, but much smaller in terms of width and height. The Fuze feels good in your hands. The phone is a slider and seems "loose". Still the large resolution on a small screen is give and take. Fortunately HTC includes "Large Start Menu", which increases the size of the Start menu icons and fonts, and increases the drop down menu fonts also. This increased size REALLY makes the phone thumb happy.

The touchscreen on the Fuze is very sensitive. What you fail to realize is that it has TouchFlo enabled by default... which changes the interaction some. At first you may think it is "unresponsive" but once you figure out how it works, you adjust very rapidly. The same goes for other gesture enabled apps. You don't really need a jog wheel/dpad when your touchscreen allows finger flicking and kinetic scrolling.

I think the Incite would be a nice phone if the touchscreen would have been better. Nothing is more irritating then not being able to click something you need to. Even if you enabled screen gestures to help with scrolling, the poor sensitivity of the screen may still cause you headaches. Also since the phone doesn't have an internal stylus.... you get the picture.

I've had my fair share of "odd-ball" Windows Mobile phones and being forgotten about when a new OS rolls around, which is why I now stick with good companies. I LOVE LG... but I don't know how they work in the mobile department.

It complained that it needed a newer version of the Compact Framework on my Epix.

I had 1.35 lock up on me during the night, woke up and the phone was frozen. Not good, went back to 1.33 right away and have been good.

after further testing, it appears i was wrong. if anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

Could you perhaps repost the link in bold? It came up broken when I tried..
