i think this behavior is due to the fact that Manilla2D was designed to work with devices without a static keyboard.
I think your spot on. At least it isn't an "end all" feature. Your phone app is right there.
I just wish the contacts were more finger friendly.
I also saw this over in the "EPIX TETHERING THREAD":

That key forces ICS to go over the 3G Data plan. Delete the key and resume tethering on the Epix.
SK1 and SK2 are the strings that actually appear on the softkey
SK1Cmd and SK2Cmd are the commands that you want to run (path to exe file, I tried a "lnk" file [shortcut] and it didn't work)
SK1CmdParam and SK2CmdParam, I would assume these are any command line parameters that you want to pass to the command, but I have not tested them, I just know that Manila2D.exe tries to read them if SK1 or SK2 exists
EXAMPLE
[HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila2D\Home\SK1] String - "S2U2"
[HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila2D\Home\SK1Cmd] String - "\Program Files\S2U2\S2U2.exe"

Using this method, I'd Changed the Right Softkey to a program called "iContacts". It is a finger friendly Contact manager that works very well. Plus since we can no longer use the keyboard to find contacts, this helps out a long.
I installed iContacts to the local device and Regedited the following:
[SK1] String - "Contacts"
[SKCmd] - "\Program Files\iContact\iContact.exe"
[SKCmdParam] - (Leave it blank)
Turn off TouchFlo plugin and Turn it back on to see the changes.
Now you can hit the Right Soft key, finger flick through your contacts, and call them with ease.

I have confirmed its a Windows Live Search issue...works fine with my geocaching app and also works VERY fine with Google Maps.
@jadiff
Have you gone to choose new location? and tried a current GPS position? That's where I'm having the issue. It just waits and waits and waits for acquisition. It's like it sees the adapter, but the adapter isnt feeding it any info.
@ anyone else using the manilla2d...
I've used

Here are the steps:
Download these files to your Epix: http://www.sendspace.com/file/uu8p5h
Install "1 Manilla DLL.cab"
Install "2 Manila.Engine-Beta-0.09.cab"
Install "3 NonHTC_Patch.CAB"
Copy Contents of "4 Blue Theme.zip" to \Windows\
Don't reset your device when promted to, in between Steps 2 and 3. Just Cancel the reset request and install the patch, then copy the theme, then reset.
You should have a pretty homescreen on a reboot.
but upon reboot, es no bueno....I'm getting the 320x240 instead of the 320x320. Do I need that RealVGA app? And if so, which one has currently been deemed as most compatible?
Also...is there a slide lock for Manilla2D?

That is why you need to copy the 320x320 theme files over. Once you copy the correct size graphics, and the updated XML configurations... it will align properly. That is why there is a STEP 4. Installing the theme is MANDATORY or else it won't display properly.
I'm also trying to see if I can fix the crappy keyboard driver only accepting 1 button input at a time. If we can replace the driver with one from the Blackjack II it might be able to work (taken the blackjack II doesn't have the same issue.)
The drivers is "zylonite_keyboard_Us.dll" located in the Windows directory
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD\Driver Name] = zylonite_keypad_Us.dll
If we can replace that dll with one from a Blackjack II and change the registry, it might work.... or kill your keyboard.

Yes, and i choose GPS location. But, I found if you do not have a data connection it takes forver. I canceled today after several minutes of waiting. This happened because I could not get a data connection at the time.
As far as S2U2, I want it also but I don't get notified of email when I use it.

Do you get any notifications?
How does the process work... because I know right now I have to turn the screen on by pressing the power button.
Does S2U2 require I press the power button... THEN slide my finger to unlock it?
Because why would anyone want to double up on steps?
I really hate having to hit the power button all the time... but without it, it'd be going crazy in my pocket. Blackberries use magnets. When holstered, the magnet of the case locks the phone, and unlocks it when you remove it (Great idea from 90's)... so why is it still an issue today?
I don't how an ideal solution would work for the Epix and S2U2 without creating extra steps on an already extra step. (aka Super Phone Lock)
Just copy it over to your Windows folder. Over write the existing one. Then disable then re-enable the TouchFlo plugin in the Settings > Today > Items menu.
Thanks again player911. Works much better now. I have noticed that the music player icon is now gone after applying this fix. Any idea why? Not a huge deal since I can still launch it from the programs area.

Its a Manilla 2D Customizer Program. From there you can enable/disable tabs, and change several things that are on the pages.
It is nice to have. It also has a function to upload themes, and Backup/Restore your settings.
Just be careful with it... I enabled the Carrier tab... and then it failed to load. If you mess it up, just copy over the latest HTCHomescreen.XML file back over to the Windows directory and restart the TouchFlo Homescreen item.
Most of the options from the Customizer program will work like a charm. I disabled the Internet Tab and the Music tab (since I never use them plus I use Skyfire).
I'll check out S2U2. I always thought it looked cool.

i'm not sure if the HTCHomeSettings.xml is the same version i passed to Verks or posted in another thread. but, if it is, there are a few tabs and other features that i disabled to get Manila2D to work with my TreoPro. if something's not working definitely check the xml to be sure it's not disabled or some other line(s) are not disabled. hope this helps some of you who might be having some problems with the M2DC customizing program.

It is the same file. I edited it to activate a few tabs. The Manila Customizer should do the trick.
