A Typical 3.5mm (or 1/8") stereo headset for an iPod, Zune, CreativeLabs Zen, Archos, Sony walkman, etc player has only 3 Poles. 3 Poles = Left Audio, Right Audio, and Ground. No Mic.
I was hoping the 4th pole made it similar to my iPod using the 4th for video.
Yikes, that article is a little concerning. I realize they are on a different network over there - will we in the U.S. be getting a different build? I know all launches have bugs, but that sounds pretty extemer. I had the to go through 3 Dares to get one that worked correctly, I really don't want that experience again.
Main concern I have is that I have read in more than one place that the buttons on the front fall out. I've already pre-oredered mine from Best Buy. Am wondering if I should wait and watch the first couple of months? Front buttons falling off is very disturbing given the fact that I plan to keep this phone for 2 years.
Just wanted to let everybody know that if you have a bj's warehouse near you they have live demos of the storm. I went yesterday and played with one for about 15 minutes. He said that they will be opening up at 9am on friday and they are corporate owned so you can get your ne2 discount there if you want to. The phone had no lag at all and he said that this wasn't the final os either. Just wanted to share the info after being a luker for a month and a half lol.
What do you guys think about the vodaphone versions buttons falling off. Thats definitely not something that's fixed with a software update? I'm not worried about the lag and stuff and I'll still be getting it Friday morning but it worries me a little with the buttons and battery life. They said that a software update could possibly fix the battery thought but that its most likely just a vodaphone prob.

Someone mentioned that there were some network connectivity problems, so It's possible that the battery drain is due to constantly scanning for a network.
As far as the buttons falling off, I'm going to remain skeptical for now. Software glitches i can understand, but a hardware oversight of that magnitude is hard to believe. Rimm has been in business for a long time, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
Woah... People are getting COLD feet are we? Iam with you guys on the buttons falling off. I hate these kinds of quality control issues! But It's not going to stop me from purchasing it on day one. You have 30 days to bang on it and throw it around

I've had a phone go dead in 30 min switching from analog to digital 5 years ago...

When I'm in my basement, my phone will be dead in a few hours from switching back and forth between evdo, 1x and no signal. It can certainly contribute to the storm's battery life.
It is obvious if you actually read the 9500 Vodaphone negative review that the reviewer did not know the first thing about or understand the phone. The reveiwer complains about Word 2007 - RIM and all of us know that the Storm does not support Word 2007. If such a basic error is made on the part of the reviewer then the entire review is suspect. The other items the reviewer talks about also do not make sense. It appears the reveiwer is trashing the phone from a point of ignorance. - frankly I do not beleive the reveiwer. They do not know what they are talking about.
I was in the Verizon store yesterday and the Storm 9530 is slick and 'awwwesome' - there were no loose buttons - the screen is sharp and clear and the action was good. I do feel that the touchscreen data entry will take some getting usd to for those of us that have not used touchscreens on a regular basis - but that is just a short learning curve and no problem.
Been reading the VF website for Storm reactions. The biggest real complaints there IMO are battery life, BES and signal reception, which from my own experience are probably linked.
Vodafone users are reporting horrible battery life, with a device bragging a 15 day standby life barely making it 12 hrs with very light use. They are also reporting very spotty 3g / digital reception, with their handsets constantly flashing a SOS which apparently means its lost the signal. With my phones, hunting for a signal also began draining the battery. Hopping from network to network (3g -> 1x ->3g) also did this. Now until we get the phone in hand on The Network, I think it'll be impossible to speculate what's really happening. It could be a firmware issue, a radio issue or Vodafone themselves. And even at that point it'll still be impossible because the VZ version will primarily use the CDMA network, not the GSM. Possible point of concern for international travellers, but US VZ Storm owners will probably have to take the Wait And See approach on both the signal issue and battery life.
Buttons falling off is pure manufacturing defect. That can happen to even the best manufacturers under any circumstances. Just a temperature setting in the plant being wrong for ten minutes could cause a thousand phones to have the defect. So long as VF and, when its in our hands, VZ aren't saying phone abuse it's a moot point. I don't see everyone on the website claiming a button fell off the phone, which would say design flaw. Fairly sure it'd be a matter of handing the phone to a rep and having them give you a new one.
The BES issue is another one that will have to be seen when the Storm is on VZ's network and not VF. From what I've read from VF reps on their site, it's a configuration issue on their side. They haven't fully setup to run BES. There also seems to be some miscommunication between VF and their customers about the differences in BIS vs BES.
