That's not a BB limitation that's a VZW limitation, and not just for BB's, so it's doubtful. CX or someone please feel free to correct me.
I believe with the BB's it's a limitation on RIM's side. My EnV can type a message over 160 chars to other Verizon customers, however, my Curve cannot exceed 160 chars to anyone. So my guess is RIM adds a 160+ limitation regardless of carrier on top of VZW's 160+ to only VZW customers.
I know there's a limited amount of details about the storm so far, but anyone know if it will have wifi?

I agree, we need to fix the economy.
Sooo, lets give benefits and throw money at people that don't work.
the biggest thing I'm looking to find out is if the Storm will allow you to type out more than 160 characters in a text message.
160 characters is the carrier-wide standard for SMS (Short Message Service) messages. No matter who your service is through, the limit for a single SMS is 160 characters. The last two VZW handsets I had would automatically split an SMS message into serperate messages if the 160 character limit was exceeded.
MMS (Multimedia Message Service) messages I believe have a limit of 1000 characters.
So don't blame VZW or RIM on this note, it's an industry standard.
I believe what he's saying is that on other cell phones you can type however long of a message you want. Then when you send it the phone will split the message where needed so it fits the 160char standard and send them. With the BB you can only type the 160char, send it, then open a new message and continue. I have to agree that this is very annoying with the Pearl and Curve that I've owned. I'd much prefer the ability to continue typing and let the phone split the message as needed to send it.

I know what he's saying, I'm just telling you that it's not just with BB's all VZW phones are that way unless you send a mms (pics or flics) message. As was just stated it does break up the messages if they go to vzw phones (and reportedly some other carriers, though I've never had it happen going off network). In practice that does not usually work and you get a message back saying that messages sent to other carriers are cut off at 160 char. I've personally see this with LG, Moto, and BB phones. It's not just BB's.

* Bold or Storm. Bold or Storm . . . MEH, one of each for the best of both words!
* My iPod is a Blackberry STORM ;-)
* The Blackberry Storm 9530 (Verizon) DOES NOT have WiFi -- PERIOD! If that's a deal breaker for you then don't get the phone.
* Confused about Blackberry voice and data plans?

160 is the general limit for SMS. It has nothing to do with Blackberry, my Treo does the same thing. I have had phones on Verizon that automatically split it into two messages (i think the E815 was one?).... but then it counts as two messages on both ends.

They're not saying that it should allow more than 160 characters to define an sms. BB's will not let you type more than 160 characters in an sms. Most every other phone VZW carries will let you and either send them as EMS or split it into multiple sms's. I too find this limitation almost unacceptable.
Crucial or anyone, does 4.7 open up this capability?
Does this mean we'll get an official date and price too?
It's possible but I doubt it. Vodafone had their launch party a while back and no pertinent information came out of that. But it shouldn't be long before that info becomes available.

I don't think it's a RIM limitation, as I have only seen this behavior on VZW BBs.
And as I pretty much have my mind made up to switch from ATT to get the Storm, that's kind of a bummer.
I posted the whole SMS 160 character limit, lack of ability to just send as multiple SMS on the BB forums. I constantly have to manually break up text messages mid thought and it is annoying. Someone posted saying that their Pearl on ATT will do this automatically, up to 6 messages I believe.
I spoke to a Verizon rep yesterday who said that there's no confirmed release date, or price. Anything you're heard from an in-store rep is probably BS, and that they in no way shape or form expect to run out of units.
I called sling and asked them specifically will they have anything available for the storm release. They said they are seriously still working on it and they are changing and releasing a beta form of the way that you can watch so I wonder if anything has to do with the BB Storm. As I've said before, it would be stupid for Verizon to lock out sling on the storm as the storm has no tv capabilities. Can't wait and still crossing my fingers.
I'm just being honest here, and I know a lot of people will think this is ridiculous, but the biggest thing I'm looking to find out is if the Storm will allow you to type out more than 160 characters in a text message. I don't need anyone to come on here and explain to me what SMS means and why RIM doesn't allow it in their past phones. I don't want to discuss why it's so important to me. I just want to know if anyone who has had a hands on or is going to the event tomorrow will check in on that for me. Thanks.
you want it to automatically split your messages for you?
how about an MMS if you need to send a bazillion characters in a message.
do us a favor and don't try to say you want something that's against established telecommunications standards, then say you know that's not how it works you just want it that way.
