Could this be a matter of the default OS from RIM vs customizations done by the carrier?
Based on other people's posts, it sounds like something Verizon had customized on the OS. I know there is a lot of Verizon specific tweaks to my Treo650 (like checkboxes you can't check etc). It would be up to them how they want the Storm delivered. If that's a big issue to you, let Verizon know. Seriously. Personally, that doesn't matter to me so much either way. I have gotten used to keeping texts short, or i send a few, or an email.
The BlackBerry Storm launch party is tomorrow in LA with the Foo Fighters.
Is it goofy if the launch party is 2+ weeks before the item is for sale.... at an unknown price and probably a situation where you can't really play with one?
you want it to automatically split your messages for you?
Yes, he would like his message centric Blackberry to be able to do the same thing that dumbphones have done for the past 2+ years.

MMS are treated differently in the system, they get delayed more and are harder to get in low low signal areas. Plus lots of phones don't display text very well on MMS messages. Not to mention a few phones are out there that can't receive MMS messages.
Anyway, on with the Storm we can discuss SMS, MMS and such else where.
I'm a first time poster, but have been viewing for a long time. I saw a post in the pre-release thread #2, but didn't see an answer before it was closed (apologies if I missed it)
Does anybody know how the "Lock / Unlock" works? I downloaded the "BB Simulator" app (v. 4.7) and it appeared that the phone locked upon pressing the external "lock" button (top left). That made perfect sense (quick and easy), but what I didn't understand was that the simulator said to simply "push the unlock button" to unlock the phone. Is that the way you unlock the phone? If so, can't you easily depress that button accidentally while it's in your pocket? It's actually the most likely button to be inadvertantly press as it's externally pertruding along the exterior of the phone.
Also - would love to hear more about "shortcuts" to switch between ringer profiles (loud and vibrate). I know you can assign a physical convenience key to "profiles" - but that seems like a waste of one of the very few buttons on this phone.

do us a favor and don't try to say you want something that's against established telecommunications standards, then say you know that's not how it works you just want it that way.
When people get used to something "breaking the standard" (read: increased functionality), they may not understand that there are network or software limitations with CDMA networks that may prevent things for working the way that they are used to. I can attest that my AT&T Curve 8300 (running both 4.2.x and 4.5.x) will let you enter up to 6x160 characters and will automatically split messages. Hell, I get texts from ATT that are split across messages.
Many long-time GSM users and users across the spectrum of carriers may be thinking of jumping ship to Verizon to have the flagship Blackberry device. It is not helpful when forum users post sarcastic or angry responses to honest questions. It makes us all look bad.
I, for one, also don't think this limitation is necessary and would also like to know if it will be addressed in the new unit.

BlackBerry Storm price plans revealed
29.10.2008
Vodafone today revealed the price plans for the much-anticipated BlackBerry Storm device that will enter the market just in time for Christmas. The device will come with mobile TV and music downloads included.
The new BlackBerry will be the first clickable, touchscreen phone purposely built for Vodafone, and will feature easy access to social networking sites, turn-by-turn satellite navigation, as well as music and video players.
Vodafone said this afternoon that the new device will be available via four initial price plans, with a number of free options on three of those plans.
Under the Perfect Choice Access 100 plan, the Storm handset will retail for €109.99 and will cost €49.99 a month as part of a bundle that will include 100 minutes, 100 texts, 1GB of BlackBerry email, mobile TV and 10 full-track music downloads.
Under the Perfect Choice Access 200 plan, the Storm handset will retail for €64.99 and will cost €64.99 a month as part of a bundle that will include 200 minutes, 200 texts, 1GB of BlackBerry email, mobile TV and 10 full-track music downloads.
Under the Perfect Choice Access 400 plan, the Storm handset will retail for €69.99 and will cost €84.99 a month as part of a bundle that will include 400 minutes, 400 texts, 1GB of BlackBerry email, mobile TV and 10 full-track music downloads.
And under the Perfect Choice Access 600 plan, the Storm handset will retail for €49.99 and will cost €99.99 a month as part of a bundle that will include 600 minutes, 600 texts, 1GB of BlackBerry email, mobile TV and 10 full-track music downloads.
According to Vodafone, a number of free options for calls, texts and landline minutes will accompany the Perfect Choice Access 200, 400 and 600 price plans, whereby purchasers can choose between 100, 200 and 400 calls and texts or 100, 200 and 400 landline minutes respectively.
Additional call charges that will be applied to the pricing plans if users go beyond their package allocation will range between 18 cent and 30 cent, 11 cent per text message, €2 per megabyte of BlackBerry email and 2 cent per kilobyte of Vodafone Live.
The new smart phone is the fruit of a long-term strategic alliance between Vodafone and BlackBerry maker, Research in Motion (RIM), and will be available exclusively on Vodafone’s 3G networks in Ireland, the UK, mainland Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand from next month.
The new BlackBerry Storm smart phone comes with a browser which delivers a browsing experience with desktop-style depiction in either portrait or landscape view. The new user interface combines the familiar dedicated ‘menu’ and ‘escape’ keys common to BlackBerry smart phones, but adds support for multi-touches, taps and slides, allowing the user to easily highlight, scroll, pan and zoom, making navigation fast, easy and intuitive.
The 3.25-inch screen gives users a variety of different sense experiences. Despite its flat surface, users feel the sensation of actually pressing down on virtual keys, which also light up when touched. This makes it quick and easy to type texts and emails, as well as navigate through the phone’s functions. Customers will also have the choice of using a full QWERTY, SureType or multi-tap keyboard.
More space has been dedicated to the high-resolution colour screen, allowing customers to display multimedia content and comfortably view attachments, as well as read and edit documents.
The screen, described by Vodafone as ‘ground-breaking’, with its 480 x 360 pixel resolution display, switches from portrait mode to landscape mode as the handset is rotated, while automatically changing the format of the keyboard from multi-tap or RIM’s SureType to full QWERTY.

I just heard from my buddy who works for Verizon that the customer service reps have training on the Storm either this week or next week. I wonder if they're still on track now to release middle or 3rd week of November. I wish it were sooner so I can play with one and possibly return the Curve I just bought.
That one I'm not sure yet. I'm guessin the monthly plan should be the same as any other blackberry plan. I'm hearing that this phone will cost around 275-300. Not sure how reliable that is though..
When I was in the Verizon store I asked about new plans and they say they haven't heard anything about this. I think they will still keep the old plans to make money off of us.
On another note, I noticed that the Vodaphone storm has Vcast TV abilities, yet everyone I talk to and there is a lot of people say that there is no Vcast TV ability in the storm 9530. Does anyone know any other info.

It says it has Mobile TV, it doesnt say it has Vcast TV.
Its quite possible that Vodaphone's TV offering uses regular data, like Sprint's TV service. VZW's however uses a seperate chipset / frequencies, which I dont believe the storm has.

Very well said! I too want the Storm to not limit us to 160 characters x sms. My Q simply simply sends another sms, automatically, if I go over 160 characters. My understanding that the rest of the VZW smartphone lineup does the same as they do not support EMS, BB being the only manufacturer that imposes this limitation.
I did hear a "rumor" that the limitation would be removed in 4.7, but no one has confirmed it. I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the incredibly ignorant response. First, as others have stated, even lowly Moto Razr's are able to do what I'm asking RIM and Verizon to come together to do. I'm not asking them to change "established telecommunications standards," I'm simply asking for them to improve the functionality of their phones to match the standards of my 8 year old Neice's enV. I'm sorry if that is such a hard concept for you to grasp. As others have stated, there are multiple reasons why MMS' are not an acceptable alternative to the limitation.
Thanks for everyone else's helpful responses. I didn't mean to start yet another argument about what is allowed and what isn't. Trust me everyone, this is a limitation that has no reason to be placed on the phone, and only exists on Verizon with RIM phones (I'm not trying to say that the limitation doesn't exist on other phones or networks, only that as far as BB's go, it's only Verizon BB's that have this functionality removed). Therefore, either RIM or Verizon is limiting the functionality of the phone. Therefore, I'm curious as to whether 4.7 and the Storm was going to open this up. That's why I posted this in the Storm pre-release thread and not in a new thread. I'm specifically interested in whether the Storm allows this.
