At least, that's what I'm forced to assume from the sheer number of people complaining about the chin.
Honestly, in the limited time I've had to play with a co-worker's G1, I can't understand how anybody could possibly be deterred by the chin unless their thumb is freakishly small. In fact, I can't even begin to figure out how you could comfortably hold the phone to type without the chin.

the only thing uncomfortable to me sometimes is reaching the tiny spacwe bar
no problems with the chin, i wish it was on the other side as i am a lefty but i am used to it already. i do have a problem with the "c" key as it is lower than all of the other keys and it being on the bottom row, is sometimes hard to feel and press.
Great thread. So true.
Perfectly fine with the chin here. I mean, I've never used the Sidekick, but I assume people type fine on that.
It does look sortta ugly, but my hand just wraps around it.
yea, i dont get the complaints about the chin either. Its almost like it another one should be on the top, which would make typing with the left hand more comfortable.![]()
the chin does not bother me... I have smallish/maybe avg hands, well, they're not huge for sure.. but when I have the usb cable plugged in that does get in the way of typing imo.. so far I am loving the kb on this thing.. man, so much nicer than using a virt kb all the time...![]()
Since we are on the subject of the keyboard, is there a way to turn off the backlight of the keyboard? I have a Bronze G1, and its actually easier to read the keys in certain lighting conditions when the backlight is off. This happens on my MacBook Pro also, so I normally just turn it off. I dont see a setting for this on the G1.
i dont know if its just me, or maybe the way I hold the phone, or the way I type. This is my first full qwerty and I think the keyboard is great, and it fits just fine. I rarely ever have an error while typing and always manage to find the keys easily..
i think its more how you move your finger and type your messages. like in the curve its kinda tricky at first then after a week you just fly through messages. and the chin i think its for your finger have more room to type if the chin was flat theirs no way i could of typed anything since it takes more room in the right side. its all practice.
I dont have any problem with the chin myself.

Yo mamma got Patrick Ewing size hands....
At first i hated the chin. i just think its a very different aspect of the phone than anyone was used to. especially those of us who came from small qwerty candybar phones like a BlackBerry. One of those thing you become used to, perhaps even reliant on over time...
My problem with the chin doesn't involve typing issues. Even with the power cable, typing is not difficult for me. Putting the phone in my pocket though, the chin so far has been annoying. Nothing that would prompt me to return the device, but having something protrude from the phone and in essence into my leg/jeans means I either get more pressure on my leg or it looks like I'm smuggling something in my pants.
Actually, I was thinking most G1 owners have small hands based upon the lack of complaints about typing on the thing... At least for me - with my what I thought were average sized thumbs, I'm having a tough time getting used to the keys on the right and at the top. It is much more difficult to press those keys accurately than the rest due to the close proximity to both the chin (on the right) and the screen (across the top) - particularly those top row keys.
I come from QwertyBar (Treo 600 & 750), so I'm a bit spoiled on the keyboard front. Never have comprehended why people actually prefer a full keyboard to the QwertyBar form. Having to slide out the keyboard all the time is getting old fast. I'm hoping for a pop-up touch-screen keyboard alternative hopefully provided by Google or the dev community at some point RSN.
The one advantage I will grant to having the slide-out keyboard is the screen size & orientation it allows. Using the screen in Landscape mode is often sufficient to avoid incessant horizontal scrolling. and the sheer increase in size is helping my presbyotic eyesight a bit :-).
