I'm sure they're just re-assuring you that the phone will still work well after the HSPA network launches.
I don't think that's as big a deal... they're basically saying that CDMA will still be around for a while.

Can you get a close-up shot of the tower "tree"? Generally the HSPA rigs are using distributed amplification - where the amps are way up high right by the antennae to reduce the feed-line length - and so they don't have to use long waveguide cable - they just use standard Telco grade RF cabling for the frequency range they're deploying.

Also, the HSPA equipment will often look like a stack of three hard cover books right next to each other... Those appear to be NSN Flexy antennae. Some deployments look like long thin divided slab antennae (directional)...
    Cheeri'o...

Please Note: I do not work for Bell. I also do not work for any wireless retail outlet.
Do not ask me about promotions or offers from wireless providers.

Curiosity is killing me... I want to find out if my hometown tower (not St. John's) is HSPA-ready since I've been wanting an iPhone for a long time but wouldn't get it on Rogers because they don't have coverage outside St. John's and I need coverage province-wide when I travel. Everyone I know has a Bell/Telus/one of their MVNO's (virgin etc) phone except one person who has a Rogers iPhone in St. John's but it's not 3G so I can't network scan.

I know exactly where the tower is... it's a little hidden IIRC but I'm sure I could get near it sometime and snap a few pictures if someone would be able to identify if it has HSPA equip or still just CDMA.

Within the last 10 pages, someone posted some pictures of HSPA tower equipment.

Yes, definitely post some good pictures of it and I'm sure we can figure out if it's been upgraded yet! I've seen quite a few upgraded sites and there are a number of very knowledgeable people here in this thread who will definitely know.

At this point is it safe to assume the "soft launch" won't happen on Sept 2nd as some early rumours suggested? I don't think Sept 15th is the date either... so we're probably looking at Oct ?

Welcome to the conversation that's been going on for the last 44 pages, and is also in a thread which mentions the new Telus ad.
As your numerous question marks and frantic poor grammar show, you are in dire need of instant information. Let me pour myself a cup of tea and we shall begin a discussion, no?
To begin, yes, there is indeed a Telus ad in circulation mentioning that there is to be an occurrence occurring on the 15th day of September. However, your confusing causes me to be unsure of whether you are implying that a launch of HSPA would make this the happiest day ever, or if the ad stated that it most certainly would be the happiest day ever. To my knowledge, the ad states the best of the week as being Tuesday, leading many of us to believe that there is a connection with movies. The Telus Bunny Ad thread, which can be found using your eyes, is an appropriate place to seek more information.
As for your concerns regarding an iPhone, Telus' rules regarding SIMs, unlocked phones and data plans, no one is sure about that yet. The general consensus is that "U" will be able to take your shiny Rogers iPhone onto the Telus network, providing you have a SIM in the first place, which Telus may not just give "U".
I hope this answers a few of your very urgent questions, and that more answers may be found in this thread (they indeed have all been answered for you) and in the new ad thread on this forum. On further inspection, you seem to have already found that thread, and despite hopefully reading it as one would usually do with a thread, your message is more urgent than ever. I hope this post reached you in time!

I've been looking at the HSPA website of the GSMA, and I found a nifty little page:
    http://hspa.gsmworld.com/networks/detail.asp

In the top left, click "search now" under "looking for a network in particular?"
If you choose North America, Canada, then it will show all the operators that have built/ are building HSPA networks in Canada. Lookie, lookie, on what it says for the HSDPA launch date for Telus!!!

p.s. sorry if this is old news but i couldn't find any posts on it.

Interesting. Globalive says "In deployment". You would think that "in deployment" is one step after "Planned" and just before "In service".

Of course, "September 2009" could be Sept 1st or Sept 30th.

I found it kind of interesting that Telus and Bell both refuse to provide any info to the GSMA... At one point they had references to dates and such, all those are gone and simply reset to "planned"...

One of the other screens that used to say September 2009 was changed to show n/a for Telus as well... I don't believe those dates actually came from the engineering departments of either company, they came from the GSMA liasons at both companies and were not official - so they were pulled.

Having dates on the GSMA site only serves to confuse...

Wirelessly posted (HTC S640: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6))

I am on an HTC S640. If I can wait to see what is coming out, you can too

I couldn't get close to it... seemed to be on some sort of access road that I couldn't find, plus there were about 15 people near it that probably know who I am, it being in a very small town, and would be a little suspicious of me getting closeups of a cell phone tower... nonetheless this is what I got.

I can probably find that road or whatever leads into it some day and get a closer pic...
