Ok I have absolutely NO idea what else I am doing wrong. Sliceofvice I did exactly what you told me to do, I fixed the extension problem, renamed the files, checked the names and paths and the numerical value and put everything in the specified folders and nothing is working. I pressed the 'Enter' button from the end of the last line of each of the script things you provided. I made sure the scripts started at the very top of the page and I still have no success. Unlike Gajic, my phone isn't even detecting any ringtone! The 4.dd is in, the 4.gc is in, the 4.txt is in, WHAT MORE DOES IT WANT!!! I have been attempting to do this for a long time too!
@missilX
Opera is at the top of my personal to do list on this phone. It would qualify as a Java ap, and I too hate the default browser. I hope to have a little time to poke around this weekend. Good luck with ringtones!
Thank you very much. Getting Opera or ANY other browser on here is all I want lol.
Sorry for posting so much, but I am really frustrated at this point. I thought the problem was that I used Mixcraft to export the song into .mp3 format before renaming, so I tried with audacity and there has been no change. I didn't do the entire QPST thing because you said it wasn't necessary if I only wanted to put ringtones. I have access to the file system and I found all the folders you mentioned, I put all the scripts in notepad. Did the entire "hard return" and the renaming, but for the .gc format when I named the song with .gc (smaller case) the file disappeared the next time i checked the file system but when renamed with .GC(upper case) the file remained. Either way, the "My Content" folder, when selected keeps telling me to download content first. I seriously have no idea what else I can do, this all the information I know at this point, I have tried connecting my phone to 2 different USB ports just to see if it would make any difference and I saw nothing except that the COM number was at COM7 at one usb port and changed to COM9 at another. I would love anyone who could figure what is going wrong with my phone. Even when accessing the My Files folder on my phone, it says "Get Ringtones" and it doesn't even show what I put on. DO I have to put the 4.GC file as well as an .mp3 version of the song in the folder as well?!
The only thing different than those instructions is it refers to a folder named Brew/mod/obigo/jas/index and on a slyde its called Brew/mod/obione/jas/index
The only thing doesnt seem to work is the slide out keyboard when typing URLs into the Opera URL bar. I have to write stuff the old fashioned way with the numbers. Thats fine tho. Regular gmail works and everything
I'm curious if the phone installs ringtones the same way if you stick them in that install folder. I will have to try that.
Based on what ppl are saying on the Samsung Instinct thread, this should mean you can install any java applet for free this way. I will try some more and report back.
OK I tried installing ringtones by putting the .GC file and .DD file into the install/temp directory and it doesnt work. It definitely works for Opera though.
Gajic can you provide a better guide? Like a complete guide for people who have never done this? Im new to all of this haha. Also your 2nd link is down.
I found these instructions pretty easy. I can try and post something on the weekend if ppl need it but if you cna get access to your file system with BitPim using Slice's instructions this installation should be relatively easy.
Why would anyone fool around with the phone as in attempting to hack it, you know there is a chance of bricking the phone, so why do it to a great product?
@Phonesnthings
Why don't you zip up those three files (gc, dd, and txt) and send them to me through pm. If you need a way to send them let me know and i'll give you an e-mail address you can send them to.
Have you tried buying any ringtones at all? I know its a pain, but if you get one and observe the files it creates it might help you understand everything (though it sounds like you are doing everything correctly.)
@Gajic
Awesome! I just got Opera up and running. I couldn't find that temp install directory, but after I changed the telus policy file and tried recreating the ap manually again like I have in the past (very similar to my ringtone tutorial) it stopped deleting the files and the ap works. Can you save images from yours? Mine gets a system api permission error, which doesn't make sense, as from the tutorial you linked we effectively give total access to any application. Perhaps it is trying to find an API that does not exist?
Another note with that tutorial is that if you replace everything in the text file like he suggests you will loose some data as I noticed there are a few new strings present in our file. I would suggest only replacing the permission checks to be on the safe side.
We should explore a bit more and get up a working tutorial for everyone as this is quite a breakthrough as well.
On a final note, I know we can modify the icon and where the application is found (ie: we should be able to get it listed under the 'Wireless Web' section) by changing some settings..will be playing with that myself.
@jay84h
It's a great phone but Telus has limitted its potential far too much. My personal reasons for modding the phone are for customization and funcationality. I bought this phone with the explicit intention of knowing it was a smart buy, and that you can do a lot with it for its price range.
EDIT:
Java Ap icons were really easy to implement. Will be adding information about that when I do up a tutorial. Still need to figure out categorization.
As for my question about filesystem access it seems that Opera uses a standard called JSR - 75 which is a Java standard for operating system calls. We need to find out if Samsung honours this at all if we want to save pages etc.
EDIT 2:
Scratch that, there is another layer of permission checks in the index files which was why I couldn't use the file system from opera. working now. I am also in the proccess of figuring out how to categorize aps. This is pretty logical so I should have info soon.

The full path of the temp install directory to place the .JAR and .JAD files into is brew\shared\jas\temp\install
I put the appropriately numbered .JAR and .JAD file in there, turn the phone off and on, and the phone installs it itself. I didnt run into the problems you had in saving files. I suspect this is because when the phone installs the application it does all thet permission stuff. When you have Opera selected in the Application menu and hit Options, do you have a big list that starts 1. Run 2. Online Info 3. Erase 4. Erase all etc? It looks like theres some options in there on whether it can access the file system. I'm wondering if, when manually installing the .jar and .jad with your method, those options dont appear?
Yeah, I figured most of that out in my edits. I think the install script generates the txt file for that java ap/[ringtone?]. This file has a list of permissions in it for Java aps and once I set them to be the same as the Telus player I have found no issues (have been using opera with full functionality now)
I have been trying some other Java aps with mixed success. KD Player runs great but it does not detect soft key presses which means you can't access the menu and put actual music in it..so it may as well not be functioning at all (which is a drag because it puts the telus player to shame)
I am unable to access the folders using BitPim? It can see my phone and the main file folder but none of the other folders I see in the picture you supplied. Any suggestions?
I was able to get the files made and uploaded to the phone using BitPim but now they will not show up on my phone once I have turned it off and then turned it back on again.
Are you trying to work with Ringtones or Java Aps? As stated earlier in the thread, files tend to disapear if you did not set them up correctly.
--------
I think the method Gajic found is ultimately a lot easier and may setup additional things applications need like storage folders etc.
With a few more hours of fighting (sorry Phonesnthings, I got distracted, will look at your files tomorrow) I have gotten kbplayer _functioning_ on the phone (I need to get the latest version working and figure out if settings can be saved between launches), but the application is not only faster, has more features, but also boasts skinning capabilities - so we should have a good media player for this phone yet!
