my modem firmware is 02.30.03

is there anyway for me to unlock this phone?

7.The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.

Does this mean that the iPhone 3G can be truly unlocked (used with another carrier) but updating to latest firmware and even using Quickpawn won't allow it?

I am just wondering what if I screw up during the jailbreaking/unlocking (bricked) process. Is there a way to restore it back to default?

I messed up my Iphone and able to recover it back to factory settings. Just put the phone in recovery mode and connect it to itunes

I see couple of people selling on ebay saying they have iphone unlocked but not jailbroken. Some of them also say that it is officially unlocked by Apple. Is it possible?

yes, some overseas markets sell unlocked Iphones. There are laws against locking phones in these countries.

So there truly is no way of putting the base band back to 2.28 if I updated though Itunes and am now at 2.30?

Tempted to jailbreak but I cant seem to find in Cydia if there are any SMS apps(apart from BiteSMS) that improve Txting functionality like landscape keyboard and ability to forward or re-send messages. The reason I am not keen on BiteSMS is because I dont really want to pay per SMS message. I am OK paying for the App, but I have a good Txt plan with my current carrier and dont want be charged again for each SMS I send.

I'm purchasing a BNIB iPhone 3G and would like to know if there's anyway you can tell what baseband the phone is without opening the box. Back in my iPhone 2G days you could tell by the IMEI number, is this still possible? I would hate to buy the phone and find out it doesn't have the correct baseband for unlocking.
