theres no way our iphone can catch up to the pre through firmware/feature upgrade as its using a much more powerful cpu from TI called the omap 3430.

lets hope that apple has also been basing the next generation iphone on a more powerful platform.

gotta admire palm. they started from scratch & came up with something amazing when everyone was ready to put them down.
off course they had a lot of help from ex-apple people

How can you say that? It's a great looking OS but, what did you see in the Pre that Apple could not do with a firmware update. The iPhone OS is base on OS X with is multitasking by nature so it would not be hard for Apple to make the iPhone do everything that the Pre does and more.

Of course you haven't, that is why it isn't the "real deal" until you can actually buy one or see what it can do. Who cares if it can multitask 3rd party apps if it gets 2 hours of battery life? I think it looks very promising but people are getting way ahead of themselves here.

I'm not saying the Pre isn't gonna be nice but if initial demos and impressions are all that matters then the Storm and the G1 would be killing the iPhone left and right but that hasn't happened. A couple of things that bother me with the Pre's introduction are:

    A) no projected price
    B) no firm shipping date
    C) no battery run time estimates.

Apple back in 2007 gave all three pieces of that info, not an exact date for shipping but said June so at least a 4 week time frame, and even ended up revising battery life estimates upward right before the iPhone shipped. Palm as a maker of many mobile phones in the past is not inspiring confidence by showcasing the nice Pre, which HAS to be a success for Palm to survive, and still acting like they aren't confident when it will be ready to go. When Apple introduced the iPhone they didn't have to worry about people not buying their current phone models because of the shiny new one because they didn't make a phone yet. Palm does and they may have just killed their sales for the next half a year. Seriously, who in their right mind would buy a palm phone right now? You can't even argue that they can at least use their old palm's and transfer all their apps over when the new one comes out because palm is throwing all the tens of thousands of Palm OS apps under the bus.

Palm's competitors are also getting a nice heads up to copy and or change strategy. Apple had a nice cushion when they showed off the first iPhone because in many ways there wasn't any way competitors could come up with something like it in half a year or so. That isn't the case right now with everyone trying to make nicer touchscreen phones.

Who knows, it may end up like the Foleo and never actually make it out-the-door...

They had working models of that which they showed off as well ... so yeah -- I don't agree that the Pre is the "real deal" either, until they get it on the shelf.

So...despite the fanboys here (I love apple too by the way)...this guys totally correct...and it has nothing to do with sales...its about product quality, andthe palm pre and nokia97 illustrate how short the iPhone really falls in terms of device quality.
Shame on U Apple....you can only string folks along so far before the competitive innovators make you look silly. The teenagers might not know....but the folks in the know....KNOW!

While the Iphone might have quicker transition and more accurate touch recognition... palms UI looks amazing efficient compared to what Apple delivers.

Apple could seriouslly have built an UI that allowed for far more. They continue to implement HORRIBLE updates. One thing that DOES NOT make any business sense is the fact that they don't allow any customization to the UI (skins, etc). If they had only included that option, people like me wouldn't be so sick of seeing the same crappy menu all the time. Transparent homescreens would of been ideal but no they leave any possible detail out so that they can nickle and dime apple customers in the future. They want to have cheap ways to force customers to upgrade.

While having no bias, I just can't believe Apple who appeared at the top of the game in regards to having a innovative cellphone has allowed itself to not stay at the top. It would be so easy for them to implement stuff like Palm Pre's fluid animated graphics but no they are latched onto the greed that exists in business. They are like the apartment owner that just does one upgrade and then doesn't decide to follow the trend in the market to make it more appealing; doesn't make sense. The iphone is more about apples wants/needs than it is about mine!

This is typical of the idiotic comments of folks who think that product sales equals product quality.
McDonalds sells crap food but outsells local restaurants that provide real nutrition 10 times over...but go ahead and value the big Mac because it sells so much more.
Apple had an innovative but feature poor product 2 years ago...it was worth getting because of the innovative OS.
It has failed to develop the product from a quality standpoint such that palm and Nokia can eat their touchscreen lunch, eat it, and lay so many features above and beyond it that it makes the iPhone look old school.....REGARDLESS if they fail to sell 20% of the iPhone volume...it's not the point to someone who appreciates real quality.

The iPhone never was super feature-rich. Windows Mobile phones have always been able to do more than the iPhone. Everyone wants the iPhone. Apple is pop-culture, and they have simple, solid devices. They'll continue to improve them to meet consumer needs and to impress.

The iPhone IS a quality product. I've never owned phones that feel so solid and reliable. The glass touch screen is marvelous, and I've owned many many touch screen phones. The experience is great.

McDonalds sells a lot because they have good marketing, amazing location, and quality FAST FOOD. The Big Mac is a classic, the sauce is great. It keeps people on-the-go-coming back to them. The iPhone didn't sell millions because it was garbage.
