formatting a micro SD card on the shuttle

I am breaking down and getting the shuttle since it can now be purchased with my online VM balance.

I have a few questions... the manual is of no help at all. It is like they don't want you to know that you can put a micro SD card in the phone.

Is 4 GB the maximum recognized by the phone?

How do you format the card for the phone?

    Thanks!

I don't know about the max recognized size. The only way to format it is to use a computer to do it.

I never had to format the one I bought. I think I got a 2GB one too.

4GB is the max it says it recognizes.

I have an 8GB Kingston in it, but it says its size is 4GB and it works fine. I haven't loaded it beyond the 4GB to know what would occur.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that to format it in the phone, you simply need to open the media player and it will generate folders for you. To really truly do a formal format, I believe you'd need a card reader and can do it via your computer, but that shouldn't be necessary.

The trickiest part of the card can be popping it in and out -- when I push it in that extra bit so it's supposed to spring out, it doesn't come out all the way.

I use a paper clip to push it in so it pops out, then you can use your fingers to get it out.

I bought my 10 year old a Shuttle from Virgin Mobile for Christmas 2010 It was only $9.99 with $20.00 credit from VM so basically for $10 he has a tech toy that can take pictures, record and playback video and music and can call his friends for a month. I put an unformatted 4GB micro SDHC card in the phone which it recognized and transfered the pictures and videos he had taken to the card using the phone's menu. I took that card out of the phone and put it into the usb adapter that came with the card and plugged it into my laptop. Windows would not indicate any data or folders, said the card was unformatted but when I put the card back into the phone the pictures which couldn't be seen without the card were viewable on the phone. I tried the card in the adapter again but this time on my newer laptop with usb 2.0 ports. Explorer showed 3 folders my_pix, my_flix, my_music. and I was abled to transfer the pix and flix folders to the laptop view images and videos as well. So it seems that the media player created the folders on the unformatted card. I am going to try transferring music from his mp3 player to the music folder. Also, it might be possible to put ringtones on the phone if the .mp3 files are converted to .3gp first and then put in the music folder or root directory of the memory card (try both) I have a Virgin Mobile LG Rumor Touch phone and that is the format I had to use for a ringtone. I'll post again if anything works.

I transferred 6 mp3 files from the mp3 player to the my music folder and a sportscenter.3g2 ringtone fron my LG Rumor Touch to the my_music folder and the root directory for the memory card. When I put the card back into the phone the media player was able to "see" and play the mp3 files. It did not see the sportcenter file nor was I able to select it through the "my ringtones" menu. I also have a data cable that I ordered for this phone . When connected to the usb port on the laptop the phone starts charging but there isn't any data access, that is Windows doesn't indicate that a usb device is connected. I don't know this for a fact but I suspect that in order to get data access by usb cable the phone has to be in a special mode obtained by pressing certain keys in the correct sequence. The user manual doesn't provide this info but I was thinking, since the cell phone has been approved by the FCC for use in the U.S., shouldn't the FCC have ALL of the technical information on the phone including all codes?

Any standard USB cable with a type A USB connector on one end and a micro USB connector on the other should work.

The user guide does tell you the keys to press to allow a computer to see the files on the micro SD card. I guess the problem is, the manual is so big it is hard to find it.
