As cheeseus said- newer docomos can be unlocked, but internet still won't work. Newer Android docomos are the best choice atm imo- unlocked and you can download apps, use internet connected applications, etc.
SoftBank are still stubbornly refusing to unlock most models.
For older keitais, you can still listen to music, play videos and take pictures/videos.
I guess I would be looking into the android-powered ones, because of the "full" unlockability. I just hope they continue making the flip-phone designs, but with android, since those seem to be the ones that set the phones the most apart from the currently manufactured android phones(black rectangular slabs), especially in the USA.

Only unlocked Android-powered flip at the moment is the 7218u I believe. 007SH is an option but expensive and is locked.
There are still a few unique features like waterproofing for those slab type phones Try pouring water on a Galaxy S II...

Not sure if you have the ad over there but here in Australia, there's a SGS II ad where it's playing a video of a fish and a girl goes 'the fish is out of the fish tank!'. She then drops the SGS II in the fish tank admiring the AMOLED display while a little footnote that says 'device not waterrproof'.
Anyways, you can see it here:

Yep, I saw that when I was considering one. Guys over at xda found it pretty funny lol.
i was wondering if sim card compatibility is an issue when using with hypersim..???the chip pattern perhaps on the sim card..when i insert my sim card with the hypersim (bb hypersim) into my sh 01b it keeps saying check/recheck uim or something like that..i don't know whether the hypersim is broken or faulty, but theres no bents or scratches or evidence of it being folded of the sort..i am using a celcom simcard,am from malaysia..any advice would be much appreaciated..thanks in advance.
hi, some time ago, my"Senpai" returning from Japan, and brought my Keitai Order "NTT DOCOMO L-06A". it seems everything is going well. I just insert RUIM Card (no longer needed HyperSim) using the phone and sms without a hitch. multimedia is also going well. appropriate explanation of the store who explained that it was "SIM-FREE" aka unlocked software.
it's just for the internet, gps, tv, still not working. I was hoping to "software unlock" everything will be fine. I think maybe the expectations were too big for now. I don't know. but I Love Keitai.
The L-06A has Google apps but is not an Android phone so there's nothing wrong. Internet and GPS will not function outside Japan with an active docomo SIM inserted.
As for TV, you'll need to be in an area with 1seg TV like Japan, Brazil or the Philippines for it to function.
maybe you are right. features such as GPS and TV will never run. it's just furious it could only see the option for PLMN and APN settings on the network menu, but are powerless to get into. is there a way so that option is open, or perhaps access to other roads, such as special code ..? such as: *#1234#

I don't think too many people on here have an L-06A- maybe you'll discover a trick.
I hope i'll choose the right thread. I've a question about these newest software unlocked Keitais'.
So, if i'll buy a Docomo via mbok (for example), that is released after 2011 April, need to pay 3,150 Yen in Docomo shop for unlocking my phone, or doesn't? ^^"
Sorry for my bad english~
